Queen Serenity had spent the morning surrounded by bustling handmaidens, tending to her every need. It had been impossible to get a clear thought in edgewise during the chaos of it all. At long last, she was dressed in a more regal gown than her usual, simple white gowns. This one was worn for such occasions as today, more ornate, brilliant, tiny crystals carefully stitched throughout the sleek white satin gown, allowing it to shimmer with every movement. Fair shoulders bare, surrounded with a sheer gauzy material that flowed into long billowing sleeves. Finally alone for a moment, the Queen of the Moon took the time as a silent reflection.
Serenity was blossoming into a beautiful, yet fiery woman right before her eyes. Into someone who was so compassionate and demure, yet so spirited all at the same time. Knowing that her young daughter felt the desperate need to escape worried her greatly. What did she feel so compelled to escape, anyway? Duty? Destiny? The burden of the Kingdom? Queen Serenity couldn’t be quite sure, all she could possibly do was continue to support her daughter’s ascent to the throne. A soft smile adorning her lips, she turned and gracefully exited her bed chamber, walking briskly to the ballroom. The sound of the ball greeting her before she’d even reached the doorway. Elegant doors were pulled open by two handsome Moon guards who bowed in respect to their Queen.
Queen Serenity moved towards the crowd, which hastily parted to make a way for her to traverse effortlessly to the main staircase to the stage. Pulling gently at her skirt to allow her to climb the grand staircase, she reached the top, being the first to arrive. Casting a sweeping gaze over the people of her kingdom, everyone dressed in their very best for an occasional as special as the Ceremonial Ball. The music was glorious, filling the room with a series of perfect notes, the decorations in the ballroom meeting her every expectation. Granted the ceremony was so much more than the décor and music, but she understood that details were the backdrop to a well-executed event.
The striking Princess of Mars arrived and approached her respectfully. Smiling warmly at her, she bowed her head in return, acknowledging her. “Welcome to your Guardian Ceremony, Princess Mars.” In succession the other Princesses arrived. Looking to the emerald-clad Jovian Princess, perhaps a touch less graceful than the others, the Queen smiled again, “Welcome to your Guardian Ceremony, Princess Jupiter.” As Mercury and Venus approached, she turned and welcomed them in the same manner as well.
With all of the Guardian Senshi present now, a light sigh escaped her lips, “My goodness, where is Serenity…” Suddenly the crowd gave way, parting for their Princess. A knowing look crossed her bright sapphire eyes. Although her daughter was a great many things, timely was not one of them. As her daughter greeted her friends, and then turned to justify her lateness, Queen Serenity raised a gentle hand to quiet her.
“My Darling, now is not the time to justify, keep your people waiting no longer.” They would discuss her tardiness at a more appropriate time. Queen Serenity stepped forward to her daughter, “Your beauty radiates for the entire kingdom to see, now allow them to see your love and admiration for your remarkable Guardians.” Encouragement was her daughter needed at this moment, and to ensure her confidence, she would provide it. Smiling warmly again, she stepped back, allowing the Master of Ceremonies to introduce Serenity. Pride swelled within her as Serenity took over, her words filled with eloquence and grace. The introduction of her Guardians was thoughtful and lovely. Taking the opportunity to speak directly to the Senshi as Serenity presented the opportunity to her.
The Queen looked to them, hands coming together at her waist as she spoke, “Guardians of the Princess of the Moon. You are beloved by your own kingdom and now, you are beloved by the Moon Kingdom. We welcome you and thank you. Your burden is not light for you are tasked to protect Princess Serenity and to also be her friend, her comrades and her confidants. I thank you, as Queen of the Moon, for accepting this role.” Bowing her head respectfully to them, Queen Serenity smiled at her daughter and gestured for her to continue.

As her mother spoke, Serenity let her mind sink back and escape for a moment. In every instance it was her being a Princess, not a person. She could barely retell the endearing moment of being sought out by the young Cosette. To just talk, like normal people—to laugh with her mother over a shared moment. Instead, she was silenced and told to quickly act as her duty dictates.
In fact, thinking of her time on Earth, she couldn’t quite comprehend Endymion’s popularity. An entire Kingdom flocked to be near him. When she was younger, she remembered balls where everyone wanted a dance with her. Those were happy and light hearted times. But, as the years went by, the requests for dances grew few and far between.
Unlike Endymion, Serenity’s status as a royal was far more overwhelming than intriguing. People respected her responsibilities. But such responsibilities with such heavy consequences created distance and fear—even among people she cared for. Her mother was a solitary ruler. Serenity imaged she would be the same. How could one be anything but. She would hate to share the weight on her shoulders with another. It was honorable, but also a quiet curse. She thought of her mother who talked of how similar she was to her daughter once. What would become of her? It was one of those brief moments where her shoulders slumped, her lips pulled closely to one another, and her sapphire eyes seemed so sad. She looked removed and disconnected from all the pomp and circumstance.
It was a moment of silence before Serenity snapped back to the present, crimson spread along her cheeks. She sucked in a calming breath and continued, taking a step away from her mother to regain her confidence. “I ask each of you to pray for this Kingdom and these women as they help us shape our shared future.” She asked sweetly, gesturing her hands in front of herself for emphasis.
“We have much to learn and unknown growth to experience from their fresh perspectives and unique cultures. So, with that in mind, the Princesses have been generous in preparing glimpses into their unique strengths and cultures.” She smiled, her sapphire eyes looked to Makoto.
“First, a Princess with equal talents in combat and floral artistry. Please welcome the Princess of Jupiter.” She brought her hands together, clapping and encouraging the crowds to do the same as she let Makoto take center stage. Serenity slipped back toward the two thrones placed at the far side of the platform, directing her mother and the others to enjoy the display from there. And for the Princesses, await their turn to personally introduce themselves to the kingdom.

((Note: I'm inserting here the music that helped me write the dance sequence as something akin to what I imagine the Jovian music would sound like. When you reach the video, start playing it and then read the rest, if you want the "full immersion experience." I hope you enjoy!))
Makoto’s heart began to race as all the lights and attention was thrust upon them. She had never done well by formality, and the whole introduction reeked of it. The master of ceremonies’ loud voice. Anything Queen Serenity ever did. And even young Serenity made everything so…grand. She blushed awkwardly as her title was read off by Princess Serenity. She took her henshin rod with a surprising amount of gravity. She stared at the small rod and her symbol topping it off. It represented so much to her after the last couple days’ stresses and revelations. It wasn’t so much beginning a new future as it was melding the past and future…huh?
Her attention was recaptured when Serenity addressed the crowd again, and her heart skipped a beat when Serenity locked eyes with her. She was going first! The others retreated off the stage to give her the full attention of everyone and suddenly, for once in her life, she felt very small. Still, a deep hidden breath later and she gathered herself and her wits. Nervous and unskilled at the formal things, maybe, but she had her pride and enough training in refinement as not to embarrass herself. She hoped.
She planted her feet and curtseyed first to the two thrones of the Moon Royalty, then to the audience,
“I am much honored to be here. I can only thank Queen Serenity for accepting me into her care and allowing all of us chosen to be Princess Serenity’s guards and guides. On Jupiter, we believe that strength is meant to protect. And we esteem the Storm for giving us the chance to strengthen our minds, bodies, and hearts. By submitting ourselves to the fury of the storm, we continually better ourselves, and if we ever stop enduring it, we cease to grow. And so, I present to you tonight a dance that symbolizes that continual struggle and the thrill it provides – which we call in so many words, the Dance of Life.”
She straightened up and took a pose. Dozens of gems glittered from her flowing verdant robes. The long light skirt went down to the floor, with a tight top with only slightly opened sleeves. White, red, orange gems were sewn into the fabric in sweeping patterns that would not make sense yet, but would very soon.
The Jovian music began: a low, reverberating instrument and a heavy drum were the most expressive of the instruments. As she straightened up, she pounded her foot on the stage in tune with the first drum beat: the first cue to kill the artificial lights. She would not need them.
Following the first stomp were two more in quick succession, always in sync with the drum. These two were accompanied by quick flashes of lightning that seemed to come from thin air. In the silhouette it created, it could be seen that Makoto was spinning in place with arms raised toward the sky. Two more stomps and two more flashes of lightning. The light reflected off the gems embedded in her sleeves and skirt, now stretched out to their full length, projecting their colors in quick flashes. The strobe light effect of the flashes of lightning gave the illusion that Makoto was constantly in motion but also constantly still. The only effect that marked the increased speed of her spin was that the reflections of light off her dress began to create the illusion of lines of light in between the flashes that she projected by use of her royal heritage.
Yet, as she twirled about, flower petals began to fill the air, from origins unrevealed. This was Mako’s own addition to the customary dance; as she wanted to showcase the beauty and power of the very flowers themselves. They possessed reflective surfaces that also caught the light as it came and went, making it seem as if the “lightning storm” was enveloping the auditorium. In the midst of the reflected flashes, Makoto herself gave the appearance of a spinning storm of light that was intended to emulate by what was known to off-worlders as the “Big Red Spot,” the intense eternal storm that was the holiest site on the Storm Planet itself and often referred to as “the Dance of Life” by its people, and hence the name of the dance itself.
By now Mako was stomping with every rotation as she spun at high speed, the lightning coming in half-second intervals as its brilliance glittered around the stage in a whirlwind of color and light. This intensity peaked as the music followed the Storm Princess’ movement and Mako began to slow the lightning blasts, but the crowds would begin to notice even as the lighting ceased that the light was beginning to intensify on Makoto herself. She sparked with charged energy as the lightning danced about her body and then all at once she stopped spinning, facing away from the audience with hands clutching her henshin rood raised toward the Heavens and all that charged energy leapt up into the sky and scattered among the ceiling, leaving a sparkling mist of pedals which danced around the air and evaporated into white energy. The music tapered off as the last sparks glittered in the and all was again still.
Amidst the clapping that ensued, the lights came back up and Makoto faced the stage again. She curtseyed again to the Moon Royalty and the appeased crowd before quitting the stage. Like most things of Jupiter, the dance required a remarkable amount of stamina and discipline and Makoto was glad to be out of the spotlight so that she could wipe the sweat from her brow before collapsing against a wall to rest her poor feet. Yet, across her features played a satisfied smile. It had gone well and she had done well by her culture.

A sense of numbness washed over the Prince of Earth in the moments that followed Serenity’s casual re-emergence into the ballroom on the lower level. Time seemed to slow, events unfolding carefully, allowing Endymion to try and wrap his mind about the truth. A few minutes prior, the elegant Queen of the Moon had swept through the parted crowd, making an understated entrance to the stage. Serenity stood poised at the back of the crowd, whom parted with that same reverence. Beautiful in all ways, he couldn’t tear his gaze from her. Endymion gripped the railing before him tightly, leaning forward, attempting to figure out why the crowd would part for her in the same manner. Somewhere the answer clattered mercilessly in the back of his consciousness; but he wasn’t ready to embrace the option.
His mind raced with a thousand questions, most of them seeking the most obvious answer. Why was Serenity on stage with the Queen of the Moon? A strange breathlessness and nervous energy caught him off guard as he watched Serenity’s rather informal conversation with the Queen. In that one daunting moment, the pieces began to fall into place. Realization began to consume him, just as the words echoing through the ballroom confirmed what the sinking suspicion in his heart had begun to come to terms with.
Endymion’s face drained of its color, the Prince of Earth releasing the balcony and shrinking away from it. Wide-eyed and shocked, he pressed his left hand against the column to steady himself. The idea sounded insane and yet at the time, it made perfect sense. All of it. Her evasiveness. Her coyness. Her understanding. Her powers. Her beauty. Her passion. Everything about her, everything that had seemed so mysterious now seemed to have been written upon the walls. How had he missed this? How had he not realized she was royalty as well? She’d understood him so well, that it could only have been from experience. It had been easier to see what he wanted to see at Kosuke Lake. Her beautiful voice echoed through the ballroom, but he couldn’t comprehend a single word she spoke.
---
Moving through the crowd, he cast an errant gaze up to the wandering figure of Endymion flitting about the balcony of the ballroom. Looking desperately for his elusive ‘Moon Girl’. Nephrite sighed, pushing the green eye mask further up his nose, as though if it didn’t remain in place, someone would suddenly identify him as a General to the Crown Prince of Earth and they would be doomed. Perhaps the drama was better left to Kunzite. He seemed to have embraced that so wholly here.
The stage was suddenly awash with pomp and circumstance as the Royal Moon family took the stage, accompanied by the Princess’ newly appointed Guardians; the Princess’ of Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Venus. He saw a fit of movement out of the corner of his eye, once again he found himself staring up at Endymion. The Prince seemed to be having a conniption of sorts. Turning to Kunzite, he motioned that he would go investigate the situation. Moving seamlessly through the crowd, to draw no attention to himself, he made his way to the balcony, passing Zoisite at the top. "Something's up, come on." he hissed to the other man as they drew closer to their Prince.
The Princess of the Moon welcomed the guests, serving as the backdrop as Nephrite approached Endymion, whose complexion had grown strangely pale. His heart sunk, for the man was truly losing his mind. Although he had originally agreed with Jadiete’s idea that the Prince needed more space, it now seemed that the man needed to be locked away. Placing a steady hand on his shoulder, he dropped his voice, “Endymion-sama… Are you alright? Are you well? Why are you so pale?”
---
Drowning. He was suddenly drowning in the options that lay before him and failed to even notice Nephrite’s quiet approach. The hand was reassuring, as he cast a wide-eyed gaze towards him. “…I… uh….” The look on the General’s face said that he was less than convinced. This was his moment of truth. Serenity was a resident of the Moon. A forbidden enough fascination. Yet, being the heir to the Moon Royal Family, was completely another problem. His gaze had been fixed upon her, somehow shocked that she was even more beautiful embracing her role as the Moon Princess, speaking so proudly before her people. What would he choose? Should he walk away, knowing she was safe, surrounded by four very capable and remarkable guardians? Or should he dive into the fire of mystery that she was? And damn the consequences?
Endymion swallowed hard and responded in a gruff whisper, as though he could barely believe the words himself. “…She’s here, Nephrite…” Gesturing to the stage, Serenity, specifically, “She’s right there. Serenity, the beautiful and intriguing woman who saved my life.” Shaking his head, he turned out of the other man’s hold and laughed a laugh that sounded so out of place.
---
Zoisite’s nearness was a welcomed addition. Surprise washed over his expression as he ran his fingertips through the well groomed mahogany waves. Well. This was a problem. A huge problem. When Endymion wasn’t looking, he pointed to the Moon Princess and nodded to Kunzite, hopefully relaying the exact message his Commander General needed to know. The Prince was generally so together, had his wits about him. This was a disturbing twist, to find him so obsessed with a woman that was literally dangerous to him and his station.
Glancing down at her, he couldn’t disagree, she was a stunning woman; unsurprising that Endymion would be taken by her charms. This situation was less than ideal, but he hadn’t forgotten that determined look in his eyes the night before, that the Prince had no intention of leaving her alone. Realizing they wouldn’t be leaving until he’d reunited with his savior, he shrugged and moved to Endymion’s side again. Nephrite honestly wasn’t sure what to say in this moment, he sought for sarcasm and glanced up at Zoisite before throwing a half-assed attempt at humor towards their Prince.
The Princess of Jupiter stepped forward, launching herself into a stormy an elegant charade. A unique lightshow centered completely on her captivated the room and Nephrite found himself taking a second glance towards the emerald clad Princess. She was tall and confident, yet something glimmered in her gaze, the hint of apprehension, as though she didn’t fully believe in herself.
“Well.” A wry smirk rose to his expression, as the intriguing brunette woman began an incredible display of lightning. The dangerous element responding to her as Master. “Do you think the Princess of Jupiter would dance with me if I asked?” He was certain that both Endymion and Zoisite would find his humor out of place, but he had no better option in this moment.

With every stomp and the flashing lightening that came with it, Makoto commanded her presence. There was something so fierce and calculated about the woman’s movements, yet the lightening was raw and free. It whizzed about her in one direction and then another, before it seemed to utterly consume her.
What Serenity loved the most about her presentation was the darkness. It was the element on display. For as strong as Makoto was, she was still hiding, allowing people to see her mastery of lightening and more, but at the same time, she was sheltered in being this unidentifiable silhouette that moved and manipulated it all. Serenity could relate. But, she hoped that Makoto’s journey in the Moon Kingdom would allow her to find a version of self that she could fully embrace—one where no matter what, she was confident in herself and her skills. Makoto’s movements told such a complex story.
As waves of flowers spun about, Serenity smiled. Unrelenting strength, but that flair of delicate and graceful beauty—that was Makoto. She didn’t have to be the conventional guardian or princess. Serenity loved her—those strong words and unconventional pant wares even. It was who she was.
Serenity’s left hand gripped the arm of her throne as she stood, wildly clapping for her friend. As the applause died down, she gestured a hand forward.
“Now see a mind sharper than any that I know, who can meticulously control and bend the endless dimensions of water. Welcome, Princess Mercury.”
Ami strode forward, wearing an elegant aqua blue gown. Layers of fine silk were artfully draped together, pinned in place by a large white crystal pendant. The pendant itself looked like a circular grouping of ice shards. Hanging from the straps of her gown were long silk extension sleeves, lined with same white crystals. They were open sleeves, cut down the front center, so they hung loosely and wrapped about the side of her arms and draped back together at her wrists. It was as if her body were the canvas for a waterfall, everything moved and flowed from her center. The long layers of silk hung just floated gently touching the ground.
She bowed to the Princess and Queen, and to her fellow guardians. As she began to speak, it was clear her personality—shy and logical. “Thank you for welcoming me to this Kingdom. From many visits and our shared literature, I’ve learned so much to love about how you use your resources and work with other Kingdoms. Water is something important to all of us, so I hope you enjoy seeing just how much it can really do.” She curtsied to the group, holding her henshin stick in her left hand, twirling it about her fingers until it disappeared, the symbol of her mother planet appeared in a strong blue on her forehead.
Music began to play. It was gentle, like dripping water hitting the ground. Strings and ambient noise that backed by steady drum beats. There was something mysterious and even melancholy about the music. It was so genuine. Ami held out her hand, a single blue orb that spun about just above her palm manifested.
From gentle and perhaps even a bit shaken, a strong determination flooded her eyes. She tossed the orb to the ground, a cracking noise and changed coloration in the floor denoted how he element transformed to ice. Her arms jetted back behind her, weight shifted onto her toes as she spun gracefully on the ice. And from that moment she danced, letting the elements be her canvas. She built levels, waves of water emerged from her palms and froze at her will, creating an entire structure. The angles and mixture between ice, floor, and water allowed her to slide, coast, and float at will. Her body spun, arms gracefully flowed from her waist about her body as she twirled and jumped higher and higher above the levels, until she was nearly at eyes length of those who watched from the upper balcony.
She clasped her hands together as all the ice reverted back to water. There were gasps from the crowd as they watched her body plummet back toward the ground, now she was the water in the waterfall. The layers of her gown twirled and shook violently, but her arms extended about her body calmly the water lifted and wrapped about her, masking the platform in a thick fog. There was no noise. The music silenced. Had Ami hurt herself? Had she reached the ground?
It was difficult to see. But, as the fog parted, a bright and hopeful tune emerged led by a lone harpist. Ami created an entire wave that came propelling forward toward the crowd—gasps again. But, just before the front rows of watchers could meet their doom in an unannounced soak zone, the wave turned to ice, Ami slid from the top of the wave, toward the front of the crowd, spinning as she bent at the waist, bringing her arms up about her body and pulling them down near her chest as the icy wave seemed to disappear.
Both her hands now rested at her chest. She was alone again, her watery and icy structure gone. But as she lifted one hand out to the audience, opening it carefully, a small blue orb of water remained. She smiled, gaze looking at the orb, before she tossed her hand up into the air, the orb vanishing as she curtsied to the crowd, who came alive with comforted applause. Especially in the front area—glad to remain not soaked, but continuing to marvel at the displays of strength and elements.
As Ami returned to her place near Makoto, Serenity introduced the next presentation: “Now, a disciple of fire and spiritual foresight. Welcome the Princess of Mars.” Serenity said, her heart swelling with pride for her friends.

Zoisite’s brow furrowed at Nephrite’s encroachment of his post. “Do you think I don’t know he’s having a nervous breakdown over there?” He questioned in a low tone, walking rather hastily toward their Prince. “He’s had several in the last 48 hours. This might be his new default state. I thought we were advised to give him space and let him work through all his complexities.” He added pointedly before softening his gaze and silencing himself as they neared Endymion.
Zoisite frowned as Nephrite asked stupid questions. “Is he well?” Zoisite cut in. “Of course he’s not well. He looks like he’s seen a ghost.” He muttered, bringing a hand to his forehead with annoyance. Luckily for the group, the ballroom lights dimmed to darkness, saving Endymion from bringing any more attention to himself.
Perhaps this was Zoisite’s breaking moment. One can only spiral in thought and wild discomfort for so long. Eventually, even Zoisite had reached some level of irrational clarity. Although he could not see who Endymion was jabbing toward in wild gestures, he had listened enough to know the name. “It’s not all that surprising, is it? Two escapist royals, both shrugging off their duties find one another and seemingly hit it off quite well.”
He leaned nearer to the two men. His gaze shifted between them and the otherworldly display of lightening below.
An odd smile curved his lips as he folded his hands behind his back. “I thought it might be her.” He said proudly. “I mean, you had mentioned a crescent symbol on her forehead and look around—only she and the Queen have them. I didn’t think you’d be so interested in the older one.” He said, rather brashly and unfiltered.
His head jerked back a bit and he huffed, drinking in their wordless and uncomfortable expressions. “Neither of you care.” He sighed, thinking his brilliant analysis and deductions were pretty impressive.
Zoisite was surprised at the fear and panic in Endymion’s eyes. Hadn’t they already entered the belly of the beast? To come this far and retreat is not what any would do in battle, so why here?
“Do you think the Princess of Jupiter would dance with me if I asked?” He was certain that both Endymion and Zoisite would find his humor out of place, but he had no better option in this moment.
“Endymion-sama.” Zoisite began, taking in a deep breath as the lights flickered back on and the next Princess began her presentation. “Neither one of us are going to pull you away from this moment. Kunzite made a promise to you and moved mountains to get you here. You are the only one who can chose your next move. I will not take ownership of your large life moments. This is your decision, whether you leave or have a dance.” He advised.
“But, I do know what I’m going to do. I’m going to go back to my post. I’m going to watch Nephrite be turned down or beaten to a pulp by the Princess of Jupiter.” He grinned. “And, I may even ask the Princess of Mercury for a dance.” He said, turning away and watching her strategy and intelligence shine. It wasn’t as loud and forced as the other Princess. Her brilliance was subtle, but Zoisite had so much respect for her understanding of space and movement.
Zoisite leaned closer, whispering to Endymion, near enough that Nephrite could still hear. “It seems that we are going to go dance with Princesses tonight, but only you know if you will too.” He challenged, slapping the man on the back as he tugged at Nephrite. “Now now, you leave my post. I want to watch your failures unfold.” He teased. “If you do get her to dance with you, I will dance with the other one.” He bet.
Again, he wanted to go back to the plan. Give Endymion his space and let him work it out. That was the plan. Now, they needed to stick to it.
"Oh, and Endymion...I'm glad you've come to terms that you can openly admit she's beautiful and intriguing." He winked.

The darkness that surrounded the ballroom was complemented by the endless sky that was the galaxy. Onlookers were motionless, completely transfixed at the stomping and lightening display from the Princess of Jupiter. Yet, there seemed to be one person on the far side of the upper balconies that watched on with disinterest.
“Is the wind restless tonight?” A gentle and coy tone asked. The voice belonged to a woman whose eyes were closed, chin dipped slightly down and hand curved near the side of her cheek as she gently flicked back wavy strands of aquamarine hair. The curvature of her lips was confusing. Was she smiling, thinking, mocking? They were straight and thoughtful, but just the slightest curve showed some intent and life to her words.
Many couldn’t see anything but the peppering of untamed lightening, but this women didn’t need to see. She was like the ocean and auras were her gravity. This particular disinterested person held a special aura that always seemed to pull her in.
Michiru wore a carefully fitted turquoise gown that complimented her curves. From the front, it was everything a proper dress should be—a tasteful curved neckline and thick straps covered her strong shoulders. Meticulous bead work made the dress appear like the ocean ripples dancing and shimmering underneath the moon’s kiss. But, the other side of her dress was backless. Heavy material was gathered into layers of scalloped curves that rested just above her waistline. From the front, a simple silver chain hung tightly about her neck and flowed down her bare back ending with a large turquoise stone that shifted about near its resting place on the small of her back.
“It’s sweet that the Inner Princesses are finally stepping into their roles as Serenity’s guardians.” She said, after a moment of silence. “Taking the spotlight and parading their abilities.” Her shoulders raised and head tilted to the side. “But you and I know that the real work and effort exists in the darkness, away from the spotlight.” She offered, just as the lights flickered back on. At that moment her eyes opened, trailing carefully up to meet Haruka’s gaze for the first time in their conversation. She was now focused on the other woman, completely dismissive of the next presentation.
“My messenger said you were on a mission for the Queen.” She matter-of-factly, as if trying to sound disinterested, but her tone dripped with a level of intrigue. Her nature was competitive. She wondered what task Haruka could perform for the royal family alone.

As Serenity addressed the crowd, Rei's features and posture remained aloof and magnanimous. She had a reputation for being unapproachable and intended to maintain it to the best of her ability. However, when Serenity spoke of how happy she was to have them there, the love reflected in her eyes drew a genuine smile across the Princess of Mars' ruby lips, softening her features and showing her true self, if only for a moment. The time finally arrived for each of them to perform and Princess Makoto took the stage first, offering a performance as unique, free, and beautiful as the Jovian Princess herself. At its conclusion, Rei applauded her friend, welcoming her back to the sideline for a much needed break. Ami was up next and never before had the Princess of Mars seen such a display of brilliance and precision. Her applause was lost among the crowd when the Mercurian Princess finished and joined them once again. At Serenity's introduction, Rei stepped forward, head held high and shoulders set in a picture of strength and confidence.
"Thank you, Princess Serenity. It is a great honor to be here tonight and to stand with my fellow Princesses and take my place with them as your guardian," she said, addressing Serenity herself. She then turned to the crowd and continued. "As you all know, on Mars we pay homage to the Sacred Fire Spirit, whose power grants strength to our army and foresight to our mystics. During our festivals, the High Priest or Priestess will perform the Sacred Fire Dance to appease and entice the Spirit to continue to bless and watch over us. Tonight, I shall perform this dance for you."
Rei closed her eyes and inhaled deeply, calming her mind and focusing her abilities as the music began to play. A flick of her wrist and her henshin rod disappeared, the symbol of Mars glowing brightly on her forehead and her deep purple eyes sliding open as power surged through her form. As the horns played softly, she raised her arms above her head, her hips swaying almost seductively to the low rhythm.
When the gong sounded, she cast her right hand towards the ground, fire erupting from her finger tips and igniting the floor at her feet. Bending slightly at the knee, she carefully coaxed the fire to rise, shaping and maneuvering it to her will. She danced and moved with the rising flame as the violins serenaded her in the background, the fire itself seaming to move with a life all its own as it danced with its mistress. Closing her eyes, she brought her hands together in front of her as though she were praying, holding them there for a moment, then plunged them forward into the fire. Gasps erupted from the crowd, but Rei was completely unharmed, the flames moving harmlessly around her bare skin. As she slowly opened her arms, the fire parted and formed a circle around her.
Her skin began to glisten from the heat as she continued to dance, the fire swirling around and moving with her, growing stronger as she swayed her arms and kicked up her legs. As the violins began to intensify, Rei began spinning, turning the circle of fire into a spinning vortex of flame. The heat and intensity of the fire seemed to consume her completely as she disappeared from view, but then the gong sounded again and the fire dissipated, revealing that it had become one with the Princess of Mars. Fire danced through her hair, down her back like a cape and along her bare arms like sleeves. The flames spread across her chest and waist and licked up the lower part of her dress, creating a pool of fire at her feet. Balls of flame gathered in her hands as she danced along to the ferocity of the orchestra, the flames leaving trails as she spun and wove her arms through the air. She turned and flung her arms up behind her, sending her flaming cloak and sleeves into the air like the wings of a Phoenix as the music intensified. As the orchestra reached its climax, the lake of fire at her feet spiraled up her dress, collecting itself as it moved up her body and when the music ended all that remained of the fire was a single ball suspended between her hands held high above her head.
Heat from the fire lingered in the air as Rei slowly brought her hands before her chest, cradling the flame in her right hand. The flame burned for a moment longer, then the Princess pressed it against her heart, extinguishing it. Rei curtsied as the crowd erupted with applause, then strode off of the stage to rejoin her fellow guardians, a confident smile spread across her ruby lips. Her only regret was that the High Priestess had not been present to witness her flawless performance of the Sacred Fire Dance.

Forest green eyes cast their gaze towards the stage out of propriety, however, her attention remained elsewhere. The Princess of Uranus stood in the far balcony, grateful for Princess Jupiter’s veil of darkness. It hid her indifference in the Inner Senshi’s ‘Cultural Displays’. Once again she felt exasperated at their trivial notions; as though their performance would somehow enhance their ability to protect Princess Serenity. Tonight she at least felt more like herself, clad in a striking, fitted navy tuxedo, a warm, golden hued shirt beneath it with a matching tie. The Moon Kingdom Handmaidens had balked at her choice of garb. Instead parading in a series of elegant navy and yellow dresses, begging her to wear one of them. Her reasoning was clear. She wasn’t here on Princess Uranus duties, she was here as a guest and last time she checked, guests could dress as they pleased. It wasn’t as though people recognized her anyway.
The sweet melody of Princess Neptune’s voice tore through her focus, drawing her attention fully to the aqua haired maiden. Haruka was notorious for being cold and unfeeling. A rather fitting connotation for someone with her burden as an Outer Senshi. They merely weren’t meant for the show and glamor that the Princess and her Inner Guardians were. She rather preferred it this way, shrouding herself in the darkness, doing what had to be done at the Queen’s beck and call. It was easy to remain confident, bold and brave at all times. All times indeed, except in the presence of the Ocean’s Ruler, she felt completely vulnerable; certain that the lovely woman could see through all her facades with just a passing glance.
Her green eyes widened feeling the emotion that lingered beneath her reserved suggestion. It seemed every word she uttered was so calculated, so well timed, she rarely knew how to respond properly. As always, she would give her best attempt; with all the confidence and flair expected of her.
“Is it so obvious tonight?” Though her tone was assertive, there was a layer of uncertainty. The wind had her feeling on edge constantly it seemed. Snickering, she shook her head, glancing back down towards Princess Jupiter before looking back at the other woman, seeing her face in only the sharp slivers of light the performance allowed. “Sweet you say, Neptune?” A heavy sigh caused her chest to rise and set, “Certainly something along those lines. They need focus. Their job is more about the safety of the Princess than this precious nonsense.” A confident smirk crossed her lips as she met Michiru’s poised, azure gaze the lights allowing her to see clearly now.
Beautiful in all ways, she was forever riveted by the Ocean Senshi. It was so impossible to tell where she stood with her, lines always spoken so properly, yet revealing her soul at just the right moment. At the mention of her mission, her gaze narrowed, seeing the faintest flicker of something else in the woman’s eyes. Eyebrows raising, she brushed a hand through her short sandy blonde locks, shrugging as though she didn’t know what she meant.
“Our entire lives are a devoted mission to the Queen…” Knowing the answer wouldn’t satisfy, she toyed with her words for a moment, choosing them carefully. “At times the wind’s speed and invisibility are called upon. It’s of no consequence to you, Michiru…”

Damn it all.
Kunzite had followed the drama with Endymion closely. The Queen’s appearance felt as dangerous as it was elegant. The girl who accompanied her seemed to attract Endymion’s attention a little too intensely. Thankfully Nephrite and Zoisite went immediately to figure out what was going on with the Prince…his emotional reaction would have stood out among the fishmongers in the marketplace, let alone a Moon Palace Swearing In ceremony.
At length, Nephrite reported back through signs exactly what he feared, leading to Kunzite’s initial mental remark. He nodded back to Nephrite and put a hand to his chin, pondering over how this changed the scenario. A Moon maiden would have been bad enough, but the Moon PRINCESS had caught the eye of the Prince. This would either a) lead Endymion to cry his heart out and finally abandon the chase or b) drag them all into a civil war.
The Princess of Jupiter took the stage and presented them with just another thing for Kunzite to worry about. She controlled lightning. Great. She was one of the Princess’ new bodyguards. Wonderful. Kunzite was of a mind to grab Endymion by the ear and leave NOW before they had their asses fried. Yet, his discipline kept him watching and waiting through the next two dances, becoming increasingly apprehensive as he saw the next control water with scientific accuracy. When the next displayed a control over fire that bordered on sentience, he was done. He was no poor fighter and he had no problem taking on a stronger force. But some of those Moon Kingdom rumors were true. How could they handle women who controlled water and fire, and those were only the powers that were being displayed!
After Princess Rei’s dance, Kunzite motioned to Jadiete. Even if his right-hand had realized it, he felt the need to bounce his thoughts off of someone, “The Prince’s new fancy is none other than heir to the throne, and her bodyguards can control the elements well enough to dance with them. Perhaps we should leave now before we find out one of her last new bodyguard can read thoughts too. I’m sorry I dragged all of you into this mess of a mission.” He said darkly, his roundabout apology reflecting the despair he was beginning to feel.

It was a fitting question. But it was a question that Haruka needed no answer to and one Michiru had no intention of answering. Michiru tipped her chin down, expression remaining unchanged.
Internally, Michiru saw pragmatism where many saw ruthless cold and uncaring. Yet, there was something comforting in their unstated partnership. While others would flail around, wasting time to ponder how their decisions would impact others or what the right course was, Haruka would act. Michiru had little patience for wavering insecurities—she enjoyed Haruka’s persistent speed in all things.
Her lips curved upward slightly and parted as Haruka called her Neptune. She was the only one to speak to her with such a grand title. “It’s easy to feel confident when you’re allowed to move freely in your own skin.” She said keenly, turning toward the other woman. Her fingertips slid underneath the edge of the suit’s lapel and traced upward, her other hand coming in to assist in readjusting the woman’s tie with care. Gaze remained focused on the task at hand. But, her point was clear.
“I’m sure the Moon handmaidens were enthralled by you choice of dress.” She mused, lifting her gaze coyly, patting the knot of the tie twice before turning back to watch the Princess of Jupiter make her gracious exit. “They have just begun their journey and are still finding themselves as individuals and senshi.” She reminded.
“Yes.” She smiled, voice ringing with a humble pride at the opportunity to serve in such a way. “And to support the little Princess as we can.” She added. Her left hand nudged forward, gently clasping the railing in front of her. “So different than her mother.” She reconciled the thought aloud.
“Hm. I wasn’t that curious, Haruka.” She said politely, shifting her weight onto her left wrist as her upper body twisted, the aquamarine gem bounced about her bare back that now faced the other woman.
Her face remained forward, watching Princess Mercury perform, yet her ocean blue orbs snaked to the left, catching the woman’s gaze coyly from the corner of her eyes. “I was just trying to make conversation.” She offered, raising a single brow. “But perhaps, you should just ask me for a quiet dance.” Her shoulders lifted at the proposal, eyes slinked back to focusing on Princess Mar’s beginning her presentation. “After all the pomp and procession is over, of course.” She added, lowering her gaze.
It was silence between them. Michiru was intensely focused on this particular presentation. It was a shift from her obvious indifference to the others. But, of all the Inner Princesses, Michiru was most intrigued by the Princess of Mars. Her command of the flames was impressive. Michiru could feel the woman’s sense of spirituality permeate the room with each growing, fiery motion. She was told that Princess Mars had a strong developing foresight. She wondered if the other woman felt and sensed similar things.
A soft foreboding that lingered like mist on an early morning above the ocean’s waves. It was just thick enough that Michiru couldn’t put a finger on the potential ripples hidden below the mist. But, as of late, that feeling was growing. She was frustrated at her inability to focus her thoughts. Her dainty and gently hand curved into a fist as she continued to watch the woman perform.

Out of the corner of Jadeite’s green eyes he caught Endymion flailing about with unrest. Internally he cursed the man to pull himself together. Honestly, it was as if the man were a wooden carriage wheel missing a spoke. Once so calm and collected, Endymion was a man of few words and unyielding confidence, and now he was falling apart.
“Shit.” Jadeite coughed, the fine wine being rejected from his gullet and spilled out comically from the corner of his mouth, which he wiped away hastily. At least now, he’d scared away any hungry females. That was certain.
The obvious fear was realized—it was no common foreigner that graced the Earth only a day prior. It was the Princess of the Moon. He internally wondered what was going on about the planet that would cause her to run so far.
Miraculous and intriguing indeed. The powers of these women and their command of the elements was enough to give Jadeite extreme pause. No level of study could prepare him for this moment. His mind was still trying to process the light, the water, the ice, and the unimaginable possibilities there woman had. They were playfully showing talents, but what would a weaponized version of these performances look and feel like. He shrugged uncomfortably at the thought.
Call him irrationally prideful, but Jadeite still felt okay with his odds: a little shock here or there? He could survive. Who didn’t like a splash of water once in awhile? It could be refreshing.
But as the woman with the raven hair approached center stage, the Princess of Mars captivated him. Her purple orbs seemed to stare out at the crowd, yet he felt as if she were peering deep into his soul. The walls of humor, arrogance, and pride would never withstand under her pointed, commanding gaze.
There was something cold and calculated about the way she carried herself. For as much as the Princess of the Moon seemed to care for all her guardians, this one seemed to prefer distance. Or, it was a beautiful façade, and Jadeite knew a great deal about wearing masks.
Fire. This was a true and surprising display of strength and control. This was an element that could change a life forever. He knew of men who served in earlier wars with massive scars and slowed mobility—all cursed gifts from a flame’s embrace. He never thought of fire as delicate, but as the chaotic sparks sprung about their clear master with such grace and control, he was bending to new perspectives.
His chest felt tight. It was an uncomfortable and new feeling. The feeling wasn’t going away. Maybe she wasn’t as icy as her external mannerisms would suggest.
At Kunzite’s nudging and whispers, Jadeite waved the man off, completely transfixed on the woman’s performance. “One moment.” The man hissed, waving his hand near the man’s face once more.
His gaze narrowed, eyes fixated on the single flame that remained of her presentation. Was fire danger, or was it hope? Perhaps he’d find out. If she truly had the gift of foresight, what did she see in him?
As he tore his gaze from the Princess of Mars who gingerly made her way back with her comrades, Jadeite had to shake himself back into focus. His shoulders rose and jerked from left to right. His lips curved with a wry expression at Kunzite’s unhinged gaze and mannerisms.
“Tell me something, I don’t know.” Jadeite said flatly, crossing his arms. “You’re falling apart old friend.” Jadeite mused. “And while we could very well dart out of this place, haven’t we come this far?” He questioned. “I didn’t think anything frightened you, Kunzite.” He grinned, before his expression hardened and he placed a firm hand on the man’s shoulder. “And yet, you’re a man of your word. You made this promise to Endymion. And if we were to retreat, you’d spend the rest of your days regretting it. The ding to your honor would be too much.” He reckoned.
“And as much as I like to watch you writhe in discomfort, I’d prefer holding you to this moment where I talked you off a ledge and ensured you kept to your roots.” He said softly.
“So, eat, drink, and for Gods sake, have a dance. We probably won’t be leaving this planet it one piece.” He frowned. “But, if we do, I’m going to tell stories of the debauchery and fun I plan to have tonight.” He mused, patting the man on his back as she turned. “Remember, our charm and wit is our best defense.” He scoffed.
Internally, some cool tingle caused his upper body to shiver. Charm and wit, indeed. What would he need to do and say to capture the raven-haired Princesses’ attention. This would certainly be fun.

“And finally, the leader of my guardians guided by an honest heart and unshakeable will and strength, please welcome Princess Minako.” Serenity beamed.
As Serenity introduced Minako as the last of the Inner Princesses, she took in a slow, deep breath. She came from a culture that embodied vulnerability and emotion, which was deeply reflected in her gown. Her hair had been styled in a way that befitted the strength and beauty of her people. Half of her hair was pulled up in high, sophisticated updo. While the other half was twisted and curled into a wavy ponytail that hung lower against her neck to bounce free with her moments. A plunging neckline left the very center of her chest exposed. It neatly separated the upper half of her gown into two pieces of mesh fabric that clung tightly to each breast and flowed down the rest of her torso. It was not until her lower hip line that long, flowing layers of deep orange satin came together, thoroughly covering the lower half of her body. Yet, as she moved to the front center of the upper stage of the ballroom, it was clear the right side of the gown was fashioned with a long slit that came up to her right thigh for ease of movement. Thin lace flowers darted about her body, were placed carefully atop the mesh fabric. While some areas could be seen through the fabric, the intricately placed flowers kept men’s imagination at bay. It was as if a gentle floral garden was starting to bloom about her upper body. Those same lace flowers were peppered about the rest of her torso. They wrapped unevenly, creating a large and jagged oval shape on her bare back exposed to the crowds. As a slow, pointed, and emotional tune began to play she tossed the henshin stick she had been presented with into the air. Her arms were covered in sheer long sleeves made from the same flesh-toned, mesh material. One arm remained above her, the other bent at the elbow, her arm covered half her face. Her pale blue eyes closed, looking to the ground. The henshin stick came alive, bathing her in a bright orange glow. The symbol of her home planet manifested on her forehead and the henshin stick disappeared. She flicked the wrist of the hand that remained outstretched above her head. Instantly a strip of gold light seemed to start at the fingertips became a long gold chain with circular links connected by circular orange stones. Dabbles of high octave notes of piano and long waves of violin that called out to the crowds with yearning followed her motions. She slowly brought her other hand about the chain. She swept it down against the side of her body. Her fingertips clasped the chain tightly as she dug the palm of her hand down against the side of her torso and over her outside thigh. Her hand was not dainty. Her fingertips were curved in a sharp manner and the weight of her movements were slow and fierce. Her neck dipped to the side and rubbed into her shoulder. The wavy curls of her ponytail slipped over her shoulder with her slow and fluid movement. Her lips parted and eyes closed as if she were embraced by a lover. Her eyes seemed vulnerable and impassioned. But just as the crowd may have been thinking they were watching some intimate moment by some emotional girl, her eyes opened and arms snapped forward. The entrance of drums and carefully placed cymbals changed the pace and tone of the music. Her eyes were full of purpose, intent, and determination. The chain began to glow fiercely, like her gaze. She flowed across the floor, spinning and tossing the chain about her body. She moved on the balls of her feet and then would kick and bend her knees, creating different levels of movement and different feelings. She moved between emotion and strength effortlessly. One fluid motion were turn into a calculated jerk. Her body would seem so calm and calculated, yet it would turn into strength and compulsion. She carefully spun the chain about her body— letting it wrap against her neck before tightening her posture and pushing her body forward, allowing the chain to fly freely into the crowd before jerking it back in complete control. She sliced to the right and left of her, continuing to paint her own picture, craft her own story with each movement. As the crowd could now see, with every movement of the chain she created bright shards of yellow light that hung about her. Then slowly she moved, fluid motions turning into sharp contortions of her shoulders and torso. Her upper body bent back, right leg kicked outward as the chain circled above her and jetted back below, pressing some of the shards of light above her. The different lines of light moved with her, beginning to piece themselves together into the symbol of her home planet. In a final motion she caught the wild chain in her free hand. It shook fiercely in her grasp before becoming immobile. A circle of light rose from the ground below. The light mimicked her chain. It moved and wrapped about her before expanding out, casting specks of light in all directions. As that happened, she lifted a hand above her head, her finger pointed to the ceiling as a strong light propelled from her finger to complete final piece of her symbol at the feisty climax of the tune. She then flicked the chain forward a final time, letting it wrap tenderly about her waist, and in that moment the light about the chain died down. At this point, it looked to be nothing more than a fanciful dress accessory.
Filled with confidence, she rose her right arm and waved her hand in a sweeping motion to wipe away any remaining shards of light from her presentation. Unlike the others, she did not retreat at the end of her performance. Her empowered and somewhat stern gaze remained with the crowd as she motioned for the others to join her to complete their collective presentation.

Kunzite listened to Jadiete’s feedback with attention. Emotions flickered as he went on: shame, anger, disappointment, determination, pride, thankfulness. To most onlookers, though, it would simply appear that Kunzite was regaining his composure. He was not a man who shared emotions freely. The few times it did happen usually came out as anger, or quickly devolved into anger to cover over some other feeling. He was too proud for anything else. He turned a quick glance at the hand on his shoulder and turned back examine his friend’s face. He stared sullenly for a moment longer before sighing, the last bit of visual nervousness leaving his countenance.
“You are right. We came here knowing to expect the impossible. What is a little fire when we walk the edge of the sword?” he mused, jerking his head back toward the Fire Princess of Mars. He placed his other hand on Jadiete’s opposite shoulder, “Thank you. I will do just that. We might as well see what their Captain is capable of if I am going to dance with death.” He offered as Princess Minako was introduced, releasing Jadiete and turning his attention back toward the stage.
He crossed his arms and settled back against his pillar to watch the presentation. As opposed to what he was just experiencing, she seemed to dance effortlessly between passion and precision. It countered what he believed about leadership. He denied his passions for the sake of his charges. As Jadeite had just pointed out, his passions had almost made him revoke his promise to his Prince. No, his cold reason and unmarred discipline is what kept him together and won him his position. It was annoying to see the captain of their guard so unflinchingly…passionate. It was like what he found annoying about Jadiete: his ability to simply state and show how he was feeling about any given situation. No games, no iron wall. Effortlessly…human.
A new feeling welled up in him. It was one that he was not accustomed to acknowledging: Jealousy. He was jealous that this woman could be so unguarded and still have her position. Unlike the other four presentations, he found himself clapping along with Minako’s in a kind of solute of admiration. A token that she had won him over.
I wonder if my generals would appreciate you more as their leader, he mused with a smirk, not only for your beauty, but because you know how to bend and weave. I only know how to hold fast or break.

She debated for a long time on whether or not she would attend. The idea of such a celebration seemed so trivial, but to the Guardian of Time, most things seemed that way. In the end, she chose the path of attendance, finding it's potential outcomes to be the more desirable. And so she stood in the ball room, a solemn shadow towards the back appearing as though she had always been and always would be there, watching the presentation unfold. Her dress was black velvet speckled with tiny crystals that caught the light and sparkled like stars in a clear night sky. The straps tied on her shoulders, with a low but flattering neckline and her skirt hugged her form and touched the floor. Around her neck hung a silver key with a sparkling amethyst set in its top and her forest green hair was pulled up in a loose bun with a single lock hanging down on either side of her face.
Though her dark eyes appeared to be focused on the Princess' performance, in truth, she was watching the flow of time around everyone, looking for an opportunity to interact with someone. One strand of time caught her attention, her gaze following it up to a balcony where two familiar figures stood: Princess Michiru and Princess Haruka, though the latter could easily have been mistaken for a Prince. Moving like a wraith among the crowd, she made her way unnoticed to the balcony steps and ascended them just as Princess Rei took the stage.
As she reached the top of the stairs Setsuna paused for a moment, allowing herself to watch the strands of time that encircled the two of them. Watching the possible outcomes of peoples lives was one of her guilty pleasures. If only the two of them could see what she sees.
"Good evening," she said, her deep but quiet voice just barely audible above the orchestra. Her lips formed a warm smile as she stepped onto the balcony and crossed to where the other two women were standing.
"I hope I'm not intruding," she said, gently resting her hand on the railing and glancing down to see Princess Minako take the stage.
