[This is a joint post for Rei and Jadeite]
Now that her performance was over Rei was able to relax a bit, easing off on her concentration and allow her senses to just absorb the warm atmosphere around her. That's when she felt it. There was a strange energy permeating the air, one that she did not recognize. This new sensation made her uneasy, but she did her best to mask her discomfort. Without moving her head so as to give the illusion she was intently watching Minako's performance, her deep purple eyes began to scan the crowd, hoping to discern the location of the strange energy. It was all she could do not to frown as a sea of masked faces stared blankly back at her. No one was going to stand out like this. Suddenly her gaze was captured by two shimmering green orbs peering through the eyes of a red mask. She nearly gave a start, surprised that anyone was bothering to look at her right now, yet there he was, this young man with short wavy blond locks staring right at her. But why? And what was it about his eyes that reminded her of something? But she had no time to wonder further because Minako's song was coming to an end. The Princess of Mars tore her gaze from the green orbs and watched the end of the Venetian Princess' performance, joining in the crowd's applause. Once again focusing her mind, she joined her fellow princesses on the stage for the final part of their presentation. While others were transfixed on the artsy and surprisingly emotional performance of the Venetian Princess, Jadeite’s attentions were elsewhere. Raven hair and a gaze that could pierce all his secrets. Maybe Endymion was bewitched, but in a moment of weakness, perhaps Jadeite had befallen the same fate. He was curious what she saw behind all the carefully played layers of sarcasm, humor, and bullshit. Those were three necessary layers to any guardian role. He was certain there was more to her than the steely gaze that met his. He tipped his head forward intently, a section of hair falling over one of his eyes. He wanted her to know that he saw her. And, most importantly, he knew that she saw him. From that moment, in all the chaos and ceremony, his strong gaze never broke from observing her. He brought a hand to the bridge of his nose, pushing up the red mask, a grin washed over his lips toward the end of the presentation. “The game is on.” He whispered to her, even though she wasn’t looking. But, he had the inherent feeling that she would be soon. Fingertips tapped at against the nearby column gingerly. He turned and moved within all the others who were too busy interacting with the weird sparkles, the only remnants of the show they were all invited to drink in. He knew he couldn’t pursue her. She would have to find him. But, to ensure he could play of her advances, he needed to find a different spot. Luckily, this palace had no shortage of sturdy columns to lean against. Eventually, he moved to the other side of the ballroom. Using the column to support his weight, he leaned casually against the column and folded his arms across his chest. Some called Jadeite a fool, but he knew that gaze. She saw something in him, and now, armed with nothing more than his charm, he was ready. Though the sparkles in the air were beautiful, Rei found them to be playing havoc on her ability to track down the source of the strange energy. And the interruptions weren't helping either. She couldn't take two steps without someone stopping her to compliment her performance and ask her to dance and her polite rebuttal was starting to take on an icier tone than she had intended. Her frustration was only mounting as the strange energy she felt seemed to be bouncing around the room. The Princess of Mars made her way to the edge of the crowd and closed her eyes. A deep sigh escaped her ruby lips as she focused her mind and reached out with her spirit, searching for the source of the energy. From this state she located several distinctly different yet completely unknown energies scattered around the room, but one in particular called out to her like a beacon. Her eyes slid open and slowly she began to move through the crowd, focusing on the energy that was drawing her near. People called out to her but their voices sounded muffled and distant as she held her focus and made her way across the room. Deep down, a part of her knew what she would find at the end of her trail. Or, more accurately, she knew who she would find, yet she continued on, unable to resist the urge to find the source. Finally breaking free of the crowd, she felt the energy stronger than ever leading her toward a row of pillars. His silhouette caught her eye as she moved around the pillars and the Princess of Mars could not stop the grin that spread across her face. It was him, the young man with the wavy blonde hair wearing the red mask. Of course it was him. He'd nodded to her during the ceremony, practically inviting her to come find him. A part of her felt foolish, chasing some man across the room, but it was his energy that intrigued her and so she justified her approach as a form of interrogation. She folded her arms over her chest and shook her head as she approached him, her confident and icy demeanor evident in every move she made. As she got close to him, she broke her silence. "When I was on stage, you couldn't take your eyes off of me, but as soon as I descend, you hide from me. Do you find me that intimidating?" Her ruby lips curved into a confident grin at the idea that she could be so intimidating. Admittedly, she did enjoy it. A flicker of intrigue danced within Jadeite's emerald green orbs as she descended upon him. Her words were pointed, tone and mannerisms full of ice. He would most certainly enjoy this encounter. “Your highness.” He said politely, sweeping a hand to his chest as he bowed at the waist. He remained calm and collected. “I was merely watching your performance.” He said feigning some simpleton persona. “As instructed by our Princess to do so. I’m sorry if I offended you with my attention.” He sighed. Letting the digits of his free hand tap lightly against the cool column. “Intimidated by you?” He nearly grinned, but restrained himself to a simple smile. “No M’lady. I am simply taken aback by your strength and pose. Yours was the most impressive of all the presentations.” He began, curving his upper body closer to hers slowly and strategically. “It was really the one thing you didn’t show in your performance that interested me the most.” He paused, gaze focusing on what response he could procure. “The ability to read a person, having sight of prophecy—I must have become lost in your gaze, wondering what you see when you look at me.” He confessed. Indeed, it was a pleasure to be in her orbit. But, Jadeite realized he must be careful to not be pulled in by her gravity. Among the misplaced frost in her gaze, there was something so passionate and captivating. Her grin faded as he spoke of merely being fascinated by her performance. The way he stood, the way he spoke, he was trying to throw her off, but his charade was easy enough for her to see through. She had to admit, though, it was a refreshing change of pace. All too often people caved beneath her gaze, afraid that she would see right through even the tiniest lies they tried to put forth, but here he was speaking as though he were an unimportant bystander and she were just an ordinary woman. While she did enjoy the game, there were questions she needed answered first. "Well I am pleased you enjoyed my performance," she said casually as she unfolded her arms and clasped her hands behind her back. "I must confess, though, I am a bit taken aback by a common citizen so boldly asking me about my gift of prophecy... or at least, I would be if that were the case. Truth is, I felt you before I saw you. Your energy is unlike anything I have ever felt before."
Was she saying he was special? He could no longer fight back the grin at such a complement. He tilted his head to the side at the comment of his energy. What was energy to this woman? “Go on.” He said softly and quickly, to press forward, to learn more. His gaze unwavering, Jadeite could be flighty in his thoughts and concentrations, but she had his full and upmost attentions. She took a step towards him, leaving mere inches between them as she continued, her head tilted up to meet his gaze.
As she neared, he took her in. He tried to inhale her — those piercing purple orbs, raven hair, and unwavering strength and confidence. He was captivated. And pulled in by her, his whole façade flickered. He could hear and feel her breaths, see the wheels in her head play out their game of wits, and he became flooded by the pure serendipity and wonder of being so frightened and enthralled by another. This woman was not his horse. This woman was not Kunzite. He had nothing and everything to prove to her in such a short time. "And when our eyes did meet, I did in fact see something there. Something... intriguing. However," she said taking a step back again, "I see no reason to be forthcoming with you while you put on airs with me. What is your name? Why have you come here?"
Well played. He gulped back his composure, fingertips splayed out from on another as he brought his hand to his chest. “I’m confused... I live here. I came by invitation.” He said, feigning disappointment at her made-up ignorance. “You’ve been to our Kingdom before. Tonight is a scare night where we are encouraged to wear masks and be brave. To be whomever we chose to be—to act freely with anonymity.” He frowned. “I don’t mean to be rude, Princess. But, in upholding our culture, that’s as unique as your own, you’ll respect that I embrace my mask.” He bowed his head forward to her in respect. Her voice held notes of curiosity, not accusation, and though her demeanor was still icy, her posture relaxed a bit.
Jadeite rose a hand toward her, lifting his index finger in one sweeping gesture to keep her attentions. “Perhaps though, if you meet with your own truth, I can as well.” He said, eyes coyly traced her subtle movements. “Our Princess is sweet and compassionate.” He began, folding his hands behind his back, as he recited what he gleamed for his Prince’s doting. “She would not surround herself so closely with someone who is withdrawn and icy. Although, and I’m sorry for it, you don’t get to enjoy the luxury of wearing masks, I believe you’ve built, even now, your own illusionary persona.” He circled around her, as if inspecting she and his own theories at the same time. “When, in fact, you are kind at your core and brimming with the fiercest of loyalty.” He concluded.
“If you’ll admit your truths, Princess—I might as well admit my own.” He mused. “On one extra condition though.” He added, wryly moving nearer to her, to see if she was intrigued enough to play on in their game. Rei took in his words as he spoke. He was better at this than she expected him to be. Not only was he not cowering away from her, but he was actually challenging her. That alone earned him a measure of her respect. Still, he had a long way to go. "Before I agree to anything," she said, a wry smile playing at her lips, "you must first tell me what this 'extra condition' is."
“Ah, I’ll keep it short and simple Princess.” Jadeite smiled brightly, quite pleased at her loosening up. “I get one dance with you.” He said, his tone playful and full of hope. “If you can find it in yourself to put up with me for awhile more.” He said sheepishly, bending formally at the waist and outstretching his hand toward her own politely.
To say she was surprised was a bit of an understatement. With her head tilted to the side in thought, she studied the pristine white gloved hand he offered her. Checkmate. If she wanted to know more about him, she would have to dance with him. Did he not realize that she had refused every man who had ever asked her? Did he care what sort of attention he would likely receive from this? Was she ready for the endless questions she would receive from her friends?
Slowly, she extended her right arm, reaching out until her delicate fingers slid into his warm, gloved hand, taking hold of it.
"I accept," she said with a confident smile. Time for round two.

Makoto’s heart fluttered with the range of feelings that Serenity’s masterful presentation evoked in her. She had totally been taken up by the sense of belonging that she had somehow created for them all while they glided through the air. Makoto had even forgotten about the crowds of people who had been watching them in that moment. Forgotten all the stress of doing right, appearing right, being right. She was still riding that high as she scampered along to a side room where the maid she had befriended, Angela, was waiting with a couple other maids to help her change back into her dancing gown.
“You were splendid out there, Princess Makoto.” Said Angela as she pulled her dress down from her shoulders and padded away the quickly drying sweat from her neck and back.
“Please, Angela…you can just call me Makoto. That goes for all of you as well, at least when we don’t have to worry about appearances.”
Angela hesitated for a moment, but nodded with a small smile, “Alright…Makoto. Still, you did wonderfully.” She insisted again.
“Thank you…everything turned out well, didn’t it? Everyone’s presentations were amazing. Mine may even have been the least interesting of them all, don’t you think?”
“Give yourself some credit. You worked hard on that presentation. This sweat is proof of it!” Came the response. A couple sprays of a floral perfume and the new dress was sliding over her head. Makoto grimaced. It wasn’t like she was trying to be self-depreciating, but it just came out when feminine comparisons were concerned. Sometimes she wondered if she would have had an easier time if she had just been born a boy. She shook her head of the thought and refocused, “Sorry….thank you.”
A couple moments later Mako stood up again, all prepared to be a flower on the dance floor. Or, more likely, just a wallflower. “Still…I’m a little nervous to go back out.” She mentioned honestly, “You sure you girls don’t need help with something in the back?”
Her attendants chuckled. They definitely shared a report with each other, since Mako gravitated to the kind of work they did. But, likely, they shared an understanding that this Princess needed their support to flourish, just like she supported them to feel nourished in their work, “Princess Serenity would scold us something fierce if we just let you run away from the ball!” Angela pushed her gently from behind toward the door, “You go out there and have a good time. It’ll be better than you imagine. I’m sure some dapper gentleman will sweep you off your feet with a dance. And you can thank us for it by telling us all about it later. Go, go!”
Mako wanted to believe those words, but she was so concerned about being disappointed, she couldn’t let that hope invade her senses. She smiled sadly, then sighed, “Well, I guess we’ll see. Here I go..”
She padded down the hallway back to the ballroom, practicing her comfortable smile the whole way through. It felt plastic and fake on her face. She reentered the shining room, which was now animated with music and dancing throughout. Casting her gaze about, she saw that Serenity was already on the dance floor and even man-wary Rei was hand in hand with a grinning blonde man. Minako was missing, but that could be for any number of reasons—some of which Mako could envy and others she could not. She gave a deep sigh again and made her way slowly toward a relatively quiet part of the room. Her eyes kept flitting back and forth as she evaluated how she stood out. There were other people leaning across wall-pillars. One man in particular looked just as uncomfortable to be here as she did. She wondered if she might find some camaraderie there, until she noticed that he was watching Serenity and her dance partner warily.
Oh well, he must have wanted a dance with Serenity instead.
She settled in quietly as she people watched. Happy dancers, men carving their through the crowd with drinks. Some made eye contact with her, only to incline their heads politely and move along. Several people, men and women alike, would come by to remark how exciting her dance was. These compliments she did appreciate and the small talk helped take her mind off the one thing that was growing like a tumor in the back of her head despite her best efforts – would she dance tonight or not?

As she descended the staircase Setsuna could not help but feel pleased with herself. So rare were the opportunities where she was given the ability to gently nudge people in certain directions that she could not help but enjoy them when they occurred.
The Guardian of Time was so engrossed in her reverie that she almost didn't hear the gentle voice of the Princess of Mercury. Her amethyst eyes shifted their focus to the blue haired Princess and a warms smile spread across her lips.
"Thank you," she said, her hand reaching up to lightly caress the key hanging from her neck.
"I am here at the request of Queen Serenity."
Noticing the discomfort of both Princess Ami and the people passing them on the stairs, Setsuna placed a gentle hand on her back and ushered her back down and off to the side so the two of them could continue speaking without being constantly bumped into.
Setsuna's warm smile widened. The Princess of Mercury was such a sweet and shy young girl. Having the chance to speak with her warmed the Time Guardian's heart.
"You are a very astute and keen observer Princess Ami, so I would naturally assume you at least have a vague familiarity with most of the notable people here in the Moon Kingdom. This is, in fact, the first time you and I have ever met. I am Setsuna, Princess of Pluto and Guardian of the Gates of Time. It is an honor to formally make your acquaintance, Princess Ami. I very much enjoyed your performance this evening. I'm certain you have made your people proud tonight with such a display of power and precision."

Artemis smiled with a low purr. He was glad to have earned her trust and to see a more cheerful side of her personality. He found that he wanted to protect that smile.
“I definitely want to hear more of the nature of your agreement over the Princess and what it entails, but we can definitely save that business until after the ball.” He responded, dropping his formality down a notch now that they had made friends with each other.
“Me?” he questioned, tilting his head and flicking his ears, “I don’t think anyone has ever asked me about…well, me.” He pondered, continuing as he scrunched his nose in contemplation as she piled on the questions. It was his job after all, to answer questions, and he so did enjoy doing it, “Well…to start off…to be honest…because I wanted to?” He admitted evasively, “I’ve worked offmoon for so many years, but always kind of envied Luna’s position at the Princess’ side…it was hard to pass up an offer to work for the captain of the guard.” He chuckled self-debasingly, “But don’t get me wrong, I will work my tail off to help you! I’ve known Luna for a long time, too. She’s good at what she does. Mature, farsighted...quick to point out what she sees as shortcomings.” Artemis frowned. He had been on the receiving end of Luna’s “advice” before. He thought they got along well, but Luna always seemed quick to fault him for some irritatingly minute detail every time. He wasn’t sure if it was because she was trying to bring the best out in him, or get him to give up. He wondered what she would say if Minako asked her about himself.
“Let’s just say I’m glad to finally be on the same level as her. With the others though, you’ve got quite a variety of personalities, I’d say,” he continued, moving along while referring to the other Princesses, “From what I’ve read and seen, you’ll make a good team, since you all complement each other well. You’ve got Princess Makoto with her physical strength. You have Princess Rei with her spiritual insight and intuition. Princess Ami is a master of logic and learning. Like you said, if you trust and believe in one another, , I don’t see how you can lose at anything. Once I get to spend some time with all of you, I’ll be in a better position to offer my opinions about everyone individually if you still want them. Sadly, I’ve only just gotten back Moonside, so I haven’t had the opportunity to pick up on anything else. I will be keeping an eye to the ground for you now though.” He smirked, but then her posture reminded him that he had talked long enough already. “But look at me prattling on. Don’t let me keep you from your party, now.”
He stood up and put his paw in her hand, “You’ve got it, Princess.” He replied, “I will always have your back, so I want you to be able to relax and know I’ll be there when you need me. Go enjoy yourself, and we’ll talk again later. I’ll find you after the Ball.”
Artemis now understood how much pressure Minako was feeling. The way she started their conversation and the way she relaxed when she knew he wasn’t a threat meant that she was quite on edge. Probably pressure to live up to the hearty challenge she had been raised for. He had to do his best to help her feel she was fully equipped for the job. He wondered if there was anything further he could do to help her feel at ease…but he couldn’t compare to a Moon Ball, now could he?

Ah yes. The formalities of being invited to such an event. Haruka sighed and nodded in agreement. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to thank the Queen; more that pristine etiquette wasn’t quite her style. Then again, she was unique among the Princesses, not one to embrace the social norms expected of her. Setsuna’s comments were so carefully worded, but she was no fool, she knew the truth. The woman was the Keeper of Time. It was rather charming, encouraging even that she would step away from her duty for a night to personally visit with them. There was an unspoken bond and comradery amongst the Outer Senshi. For the weight they bore was so different from the bright optimism of the Inner Senshi, the could bask and capture a small moment of reprieve in the other’s company.
Eyebrows furrowed against Setsuna’s back as she slipped away quietly, those words hanging in the air. One could drive themselves insane reading into the Time Keeper’s words. For she wasn’t a woman of many words, but those that she chose to utter were calculated and planned. “Hmmm.” Haruka then smirked; halfway bemused, she shook her head as Setsuna slipped away almost as quickly as she’d approached. Haruka’s gaze narrowed contemplatively as the Time Guardian floated down the staircase.
“It would appear there is only one person in the Universe more perplexing and mysterious than you, Michiru…” At that point, she turned her head to glance at the other woman, wondering if she’d had it all figured out already, for the aqua haired senshi’s wisdom was surely greater than her own. Setsuna’s words always bore so much weight; they were always so thoughtfully put, so cryptic and if you could figure her out, telling. Burdened with watching over time itself, the woman knew everything that had already taken place, and all that would. Grateful she wasn’t tasked with that, for she surely couldn’t have worn it as well as the emerald haired woman.
As the Inner Senshi finished their presentation; complete with a lovely fit of sparkles raining down about them. Shifting her frame to face Michiru, she bowed deeply at the waist, right arm curling at the bend. Setsuna’s words hung in the back of her consciousness, begging to be read into. Perhaps she’d allow herself to hide behind undue formality, not that she was entirely sure why she needed to hide from the other woman. The beautiful Michiru just seemed to ‘get’ her, read her actions before she could act, understand her reasons with unrivaled trust. As someone who’d spent far too much time alone, surrendering to the charms of the other woman, allowing her to see her for exactly what she was, was a disconcerting thought.
Straightening her form, a wry smirk met her lips as stormy green eyes met the endless azure gaze of the Ocean Goddess. Extending her hand to the other woman, the tone in which she asked warmer than before, “Princess Neptune, may I have this dance?”

[Joint post for Minako and Kunzite is tagged to this post, FYI!]
Minako's right eyebrow flickered upward at his statement and a smile stole away her once serious façade. “You are trained in politics, Artemis.” She concluded. “To pass away good conversation for forced pleasantries and dancing.” She sighed.
Truth be told, she loved dances of any sort. On Venus music and movement were ingrained parts of her culture. But here on the Moon, she felt more eyes and less acceptance for some reason. Instead of being free to her own reason and judgment, she found herself carefully plotting out and second-guessing her every thought.
She listened carefully to his next statements, saying little. He was a shadow — a devoted and hard working member to the royal family that was probably taken for granted too often. She made a mental note to ensure that stopped with their partnership. She wanted to know those she worked with intimately, their strengths and weaknesses. It was critical to have that 360-degree view into a person’s soul to truly have their trust. “Well Artemis, in the coming days, weeks, and such, we’ll get to know each other quite well. I certainly want to know more about you, and I’m very glad that you’ve been assigned on the Moon for my benefit.” She said kindly. She found his statements about Luna to be quite interesting. She’d have to ask Serenity what Luna’s said of the stark white cat when she had a chance. He had strong opinions, but there was something below the surface to his statements, something almost protective in his shared stories with Luna. This would be fun to poke at over time.
She blushed. “My party?” She scoffed, bringing a hand to her chest. “Hardly.”
Her lips parted, emerald green eyes gazed over his paw on her hand. When had she become such a solitary person? She had just rattled off the importance of working as a team in countless ways, but his small action of partnership reminded her of all the ways she had learned to work alone. This would be different — all the Princesses, Artemis, the Queen, and other players she didn’t even know about.
“You got it. I look forward to seeing you after the ball.” She said, placing her other hand over his soft white fur, giving a squeeze before her hand slid away and she stood.
“You know Artemis, behind Luna’s steely exterior is just a teddy bear who is just a fiercely loyal teddy bear… at least that’s what Serenity says.” She winked. “She’s always scattered before any big moment involving her charge…we all are. Now that the pressure’s off, you should go talk to her. I’m sure you have much to catch up on, and she could probably give you more advice on how best to navigate the palace politics.” She offered before taking her leave.
The sweet melody from the orchestra lingered into her senses and she closed her eyes, drawing in a breath. Calm, Minako. Her fingertips released the soft layers of her gown, choosing to stand idle and take in the music and the moments about her. How much time had gone by, she wondered. In time with plucks of piano keys her gaze wavered to all her friends scattered about. Makoto was probably lurking in the shadows, Ami deep in some complex conversation. The most surprising was Rei taking the dance floor with some blonde-haired beauty. Minako shrugged, running a hand over the detailed lacing of her sheer sleeves. Out of all of them, she was the one standing tall and alone. How unfortunate. Her lips pursed at the thought with a lackluster expression. Although Serenity had signed off from all dancing in her deep melancholy, there she was, glowing in the arms of some gentleman. How predictable, she deadpanned. She was an interesting creature, so fragile and so strong. She was wild and free in one moment and drowning in responsibility the next. Maybe they all were. If she were just another person in a mask, no powers or position, would any of them even see her?
Stern. Calculated. Captivated. As she continued to survey her surroundings her gaze fell upon a man with these characteristics. His hair was stark white, quite reminiscent of her new partner, Artemis. Her head tilted to the side, eyes narrowed as they strained to follow his piercing stare. He was alone, too. Yet, he was meticulously watching Serenity. No, she recalled, as she was able to better focus. He was watching the man who danced with her. This wasn’t the gaze of someone joyfully taking in a happy moment. This man was monitoring a situation. His stance and his unbearing seriousness…she needed to check things out, if for nothing more than learning more about the man who danced with her Princess. Is this how her life was meant to play out now? No dances, all duty. She took in a deep breath, slipping into the crowd. She moved with the current of the music floating and sliding her body between dancing couples.
Her heart raced and concerns rose high, quickening her pace and she took an unnecessarily long path from the back of the ballroom to approach the stranger from behind.
She placed a hand on a nearby column, shifting her weight as her upper body leaned toward the man in question. "May I ask for a dance?" She questioned politely to get his attention, but as their eyes would meet her gaze would harden.
Kunzite was caught off-guard by the sudden invitation. Mentally kicking himself and every nerve going on high alert, he turned a quick glance at the woman. She was young, attractive…oh, and the Princess of Venus, the chief bodyguard of the Princess. Well happy day. As her gaze hardened on him, he knew it was time to battle. With words and wit alone, if he could manage.
"It would certainly keep you from standing out." She added, crossing her arms, tone lowering with intensity. "Who are you and..." she motioned a hand at the man dancing with her Princess "...who is he?" She questioned, pushing her weight away from the column as she walked about him as if she were circling prey, her eyes traced up and down his body—he seemed confident and strong. "You see, that man is quite focused on My Lady...and you are quite focused on that man, which makes me quite focused on you." She said sternly in a hushed breath as to not cause a scene. At this moment, there was no need for it.
“Princess Minako” Kunzite replied coolly, keeping his reactions perfectly in check, “My Lady, I’m honored you would take the time to speak with me when there are so many other men who would love your attention. But truly, you don’t accost every lone gentleman this way, do you? Who wouldn’t be intrigued by the man who worked up the nerve to ask the Moon Princess for a dance? He must be quite brave…or completely reckless.” He added, a little hidden jab at the man who was almost floating above the ground as he stood here taking the heat, “I’m simply pondering on which one is the truth.”
She chuckled at his brash statements. “You’re quite forward, aren’t you?” She questioned, tilting her head with intrigue. At his quick wit, she scoffed, raising her chin and closing her eyes in judgment. “You feel accosted because you obviously have something to hide.” She reconciled, eyes opened. Her emerald green gaze seemed to pierce his soul. Her free hand slid down along her side, fingertips curled about the orange-gemmed chain that hung along her waist.
She had him there. He was the invader in this scenario, and that made him unwilling to come out with the simple truth as much as he hated deception. He noted her hand going toward that chain of hers. He had seen its strength during the dance, and knew that unarmed he stood no chance if she decided to unleash it on him, "Maybe so. But all the men here wear masks." he said, with a faint smile and a broad gesture, "Is that not the point of the mask, to hide things? Why threaten me for simply being...in character?"
“I don’t care that all the men wear masks about here. Remember, I’m not a local to this Kingdom. People can hide and be whatever they choose to be.” She said. “But if you are hiding something or someone that could in any way hurt her…” Minako’s gaze darted to Serenity. “…Then, it’s my duty to threaten and protect her. At all costs. I have a feeling that you understand that sense of upmost responsibility?” She rose a brow.
"All too well, my Lady," Kunzite acknowledged with a slight bow of the head before meeting her gaze again, "Fine then. I suppose it will do no harm to acknowledge that the man dancing with Princess Serenity is in my charge. I am entrusted with his care, and it is my duty to threaten and protect him at all costs as well. And believe me, he wishes your Princess no harm. Quite the contrary. We might even say he's risked his life and reputation to meet her again. And thus I risk mine by being here." Although essentially acknowledging his plight, his countenance was firm. Repeating those words of duty had awoken in him the reminder that he would willingly die for his Prince, even if it was here on the ballroom floor.
“Would it do you no harm to just be direct and honest with me? Blanket hypothesis does nothing here.” She said, her tone grew with annoyance. “Who would risk his life and reputation to dance with Serenity?” She questioned, squinting her eyes and lips smashing together in frustration. “I’ve grown up with the Princess and those she spends her time with are few and far between. She’s busy with her studies and her own training.” She said dismissively. “This is a peaceful Kingdom. It’s a place and people who don’t believe in violence of any form.” She added sternly.
"It does appear that way, doesn't it?" Kunzite replied, looking first at the ceiling of the large dance hall and then drifting slowly downwards over the lights and people before meeting Minako's irratated expression again, "Your men do not bear arms, even ceremonially. Your archetecture is built for beauty, not fortification. Your Princess introduces her new guardians by showcasing their abilities to admire and not fear. It is almost like a dream." He smirked like a man who decides on a final desperate bluff, "And yet here you are reminding me that you are afraid of my master and myself for the sake of your Princess. But, as you have said, I know your duty and I would have done harsher if our positions were reversed." He looked sidelong at her, an expression he used when he was trying to read someone's intentions and ultimately shrugged lightly.
“Beauty, not fortification?” She repeated his words. “You sound as if you were planning an invasion, breaking down and analyzing this place for weakness.” She said, her posture straightening, legs bent at the knees defensively. “Let me be very, very clear. I am not afraid of you. I simply want you to clear my head, because I’d rather give you the opportunity to be honest and resolve this peacefully in respect to the Moon’s culture, rather than snuffing you out quickly and quietly as I’d prefer.” She snapped. “Harsher you say? I’d love to see you try, Kunzite. Tell me, what would you do if our roles were reversed?” She mused.
“My job is to do the hard thing if necessary. Take lives, give up my own. It’s the same journey that Serenity walks. She’s tasked to give up her life, to protect these peaceful times. Do you even understand this Kingdom and the roles within it?” She questioned.
"Very well. I am already in your power. I will entrust myself to the strength of your character and the quality of your kingdom. I am Commander General Kunzite of Earth, who serves the Crown Prince Endymion...the man dancing with your Princess Serenity." "Serenity…” Minako winced, head falling into her hands as she breathed in a deep, uncomfortable breath. Her chest rose and fell slowly as she lifted her head from her hands, recoiling some of her prior fervor to a timid tone. “The Prince of Earth? You seriously aren’t joking… are you?” She said, her expression flat lining in horror. Obviously he wasn’t joking. She pressed her bare back along the cool surface of the nearby column, hips arched forward at the sensation. “A kind man, she said. A humble warrior, she said. But, nothing about him being a Prince.” She grumbled, crossing her arms.
“Sadly, I am not. And we were just as…disappointed that the ‘beautiful and intriguing woman’ he met just so happens to heir to the Lunar throne." He sighed, mirroring her frustration, but he had to ensure they were not going to be carted away, so he continued, "That said, causing a scene about our presence would be of no benefit to any of us—ourselves for obvious reasons, but neither for the blithe couple over there.” He said, with a quick glance toward Endymion and Serenity, oblivious to the world.
The wheels in her mind were chugging feverously. “I don’t disagree with you.” She said quietly, her gaze falling along the two happily dancing together. She bit the tender flesh of her lower lip. As much as she hated to admit it, he had a point about the sheer chaos of bringing too much attention to the group of intruders. “How many others are here from the Earth Kingdom?” She questioned. If this really were the Crown Prince of Earth, he’d have a full protection detail travel with him. She tucked away his comment of Serenity being beautiful and intriguing. That’s a card to play another time.
“There are five of us. Myself, three other men of my rank, and the Prince. Believe me, I truly hoped this could have resolved in any other way than the way Fate seems to desire it.” He sighed softly, before catching himself and pressing on, “I have cultivated Endymion’s unshakable will for years. Never until this…event has he actually employed it.””
“You do understand that all of this is forbidden by law, correct? And yet, you brought him here anyway. You hold your friendship with your Prince higher than some legislative honorability, I assume?” She questioned.
“My life is pledged to Endymion,” Kunzite replied, “His word is our law. My role up to now has been trying to teach him to make the best use of his word. We might question his wisdom in bringing us here…but the alternative was merely to deny him his birthright.” The answer was half truth. If Kunzite had merely played his cards better, Endymion would never have known the option to come here. He would have preferred that, even if it meant going against Endymion’s desires…but once it was known….well, that story was already told.
"What exactly is your aim at coming here then?" She continued. "Do you expect this to be some trip of closure?" She rounded back near him. "You know you'll only build their resolve." She huffed, beginning to rub her hands together nervously.
Kunzite sighed, a pained glimmer passing over his shrouded face as he looked away and put a hand to his chin, “I do not know what to expect of this. All I can do is simply see it through. Strengthening his resolve as it may be, the alternative was only to crush it, and I am unwilling to do that.” Kunzite enjoyed things being in black and white. Framing the question as an either or was useful in that way. If the alternative was to crush Endymion’s spirit, then this simply was the only choice they had to follow.
"…If Serenity were to sneak down to Earth again and you were to know about it, what would happen to her?" She asked suddenly. Her gaze was relentless. Her face leaned close to his, eyes desperate for an answer. She brought a hand onto his shoulder, squeezing intently. Either he would say that something terrible would happen to their Princess and that she was not welcome on Earth. Then Minako would feel free to put her foot down and put a stop to all these reckless notions and communications between Planets that were meant to live peaceably at a distance. But, if he said that he'd allow it, for his Prince that he's obviously quite loyal to, she would at least be able to sleep at night with their group decision to let Serenity wander. She needed to keep her cards close, however. She didn't know how much she could trust this man, not yet.
Kunzite looked back steadily, making note of the tension in the arm on his shoulder. With her face this close, he could see the concern radiating from it. He could read the weight of responsibility in her eyes, and he empathized with the lonely pain of command that provoked it. He reached up to take her hand, bringing it down as he spoke directly back into her eyes, “You may relax, Princess Minako. No harm would come to your Princess from me or any of my command. Not only would it be against our honor, Endymion would probably take it as treason.” Kunzite smirked uneasily.

“Ah.” Ami blushed, feeling the woman’s fingertips about her back. Her head lowered as the moved to a better location. “Thank you!” Ami said with a sigh of relief. “It was quite silly of me to start a conversation in such a high-traffic location.” She chuckled, eyes rose slightly to meet the other woman’s gaze with a renewed confidence.
“The Queen is a kind and humble ruler.” Ami said after a moment of silence. “I am constantly reminded of her far-reaching grace as I meet others in her larger network.” She mused.
“Princess…” Ami’s mouth opened at the woman’s statement. Yes, the woman was right. Ami knew much of the Kingdom and its extensive reach of allies. Yet, she thought the woman standing in front of her was more fiction than fact. Ami was guided by reason, science, and notions of a keeper of time extended too far into fantasy for her.
Ami quickly bowed her head, pieces of her vibrant blue hair fell over her right eye. “I’m sorry I didn’t know who you were. It’s my sincere pleasure to meet you though.” She said gently.
“I…I don’t want to overstep. But, how do you keep track or parse through all the information that’s coming at you?” She questioned. “Potential timelines are endless, I imagine. It must be…quite overwhelming at times. It’s an honor and humbling to meet you.” Ami reiterated. “It puts a new perspective on my own duties.” She mentioned with a light smile.
But before the other woman had a chance to answer, another broke into the conversation. “I’m sorry, am I interrupting?” He said politely, bowing deeply at the waist. “My name’s Zoisite. Princess, I found your presentation to be quite impressive. Underneath all the display, it was your understanding of motion, angles, and the scientific properties to best transform water to ice at just the right moment. I’d love to…pick you brain… and I wondered if you’d like to dance?” The words spilled out awkwardly, his gaze diverted from his true target to the older, noble woman.
“Uh.” Ami stood frozen, a crimson blush clung over her facial expression. The stranger had a knowing gaze. His shaking confidence wrapped up in a slate gray tuxedo. Pale green eyes hid behind a blue mask. Ami took in a sharp breath as she watched the man flounce a hand underneath his thick, wavy hazel locks. They were held back by a simple ribbon. His hair was quite long, she realized. A few wavy strands framed his face.
Oh dear. She got so busy trying to learn things about this stranger. Gosh, how long had she been silent. He asked her to dance. She wasn’t used to being asked to dance. She wasn’t used to attention. Her heart began to thump. It was distracting and unsettling. Her hand at her side clenched in a fist as her chest seemed to tighten.
“Um, this… is Princess Setsuna from the planet Pluto. She’s visiting the Queen.” Ami motioned, being too caught off guard to respond to his simple request.
It seemed there were more Princesses and more planets than the overwhelming number they had already seen. Zoisite wondered what the difference between the ones he know of and this woman’s responsibilities were. How far did this planet’s network extend exactly? An uneasy lump started to form at his throat, he cleared it, tried to swallow it down. He’d be damned if Nephrite secured a dance that evening and he did not. They all needed to be clear and strong for Endymion.
“Oh.” Zoisite said, shifting his gaze back and forth between the two. His fingertips weaved in and out of a few lucky strands of hair, a bad habit of his. With one final flick of his wrist, he released them. “Princess Setsuna, it’s also a pleasure to meet you…will you be presenting yourself to the court at a later time?” He questioned.

“That’s unfair.” Michiru folded her arms and lifted her chin in defiance. “I come by my mystery honestly, Setsuna has access to far more information to help her achieve such status.” She countered. “You have to wonder why she came tonight.” Michiru said softly, opening her eyes and continuing to speak as she watched the final presentations.
“Why is tonight so special?” She questioned, her tone grew serious and stern. More than anything, it was her own annoyance and wavering confidence when in the presence of the other woman. Michiru would always have less information to go on, and simply accepting that was a hard knot to swallow for the aquamarine-haired woman. “She knows the skills of the Inner Senshi better than all of us, so perhaps there’s more to this night than just the presentations?” She questioned, seeking solace and understanding from Haruka. Internally, she wondered if the other woman felt a sinking sense of unease as well. It bubbled to the surface, Michiru's concern was like an ocean—anxious in a storm.
Michiru wondered if there would come a day when they’d stop with their games. Always positioning and countering each other about a fleeting line, careful not to push to the outskirts—the space beyond their comfort zones. All the thoughts and feelings embedded in her chest, in that moment, weighted her mind, but she carried her burdens so elegantly.
Turning her head to the side her gaze crept up to meet the other woman’s. “Of course.” Michiru said simply, with a gentle smile.
“Haruka…” She suddenly took the other woman’s hand softly within her own, holding them up into the small space between them. Her eyes seem gentle, but that lingering mystery swirled on. Her gaze was soft toward the other woman, but there was no mistaking that with every glance, Michiru was always attempting to dig deeper into knowing her distant companion.
“Do you think we’re worthy enough to step out of the shadows tonight and dance close to the music?” She questioned. Her fingertips slid against the other woman’s, filling up the gaps between the other’s fingertips. “I’d let you lead.” Michiru said coyly.
That way, Haruka would be able to split her attentions in peace. Whether or not the other woman ever said it, she was protective of the young Moon princess. Haruka would be watching her tonight—Michiru, too. Setsuna was right, they would need to take the time to pay respect to their Queen. Haruka hated the politics of it all, but as always, Michiru would be at the woman's side, probably doing all the talking. That could wait. Michiru had hoped this moment would come. She took pleasure and comfort in the company of few, but to be wrapped up in the arms of this woman with a well-executed melody running in the background would be a treat. It was another unspoken fact between them.

Luna remained idle, perched atop the balcony railing of the ballroom’s upper level. After holding her breath for quite a time, she finally released it. Aside from her continued glaring punctuality problems, Serenity did quite well in her eyes.
Luna grew nervous any time the Princess was put in front of her Kingdom. Not because she didn’t love the girl, but Serenity was unpredictable. Serenity was fully transparent, and unbeknownst to her, there were words and messages that she’d easily tell that her people weren’t ready to hear. In that moment, Luna was quite proud of her charge.
The words were heartfelt and sincere. Serenity had a knack for highlighting the unique and honest qualities held within each of her guardians. It was a different presentation than the Queen would prefer, but it would do. It was right. This represented the seedlings of a new era for the Kingdom. It was good that the people were getting a feel for who their young Princess was and what she stood for.
Although she’d never admit it, the words she had written for Serenity to say were not as sweet and endearing. Luna hardly tried to push words on Serenity, knowing the girl was too proud to use them, and when she felt compelled to, she’d go off script just to spite her feline advisor.
Now that the fretting was through, Luna’s mind wandered to the next order of business: Artemis. She was slightly surprised and even more bewildered by his appointment to the Palace. Serenity told her not to worry, but a part of her feared the Queen was losing faith in her ability to direct her daughter. The recent gallivanting beyond the safety of the palace was a glaring blemish to Luna’s record.
Luna had a great deal of respect for her feline peer, but she always thought he lacked the focus and objective judgment needed for a role like hers. And, where was he anyway? Her eyes scanned the lower levels, thinking a stark white cat with emerald eyes would pop out among the sea of beings unlike him.
“Stuffing his face with food, no doubt.” She mumbled. He didn’t deserve her judgment, nor unnecessarily focused anger. Perhaps she just felt a bit below her own station at the moment. She needed to do her best to not take out her own wavering confidence on him. She had been short with him when he tried to greet her. She made a note to make up for that when she saw him next.
Her ears twitched as the band began to play. Her head bobbed with the pace of the tune. Balls were quite elegant and nostalgic for her. She watched the Inner Princesses and her own charge interact with others from afar. Regardless of the unequal amount of time they had spent together, she felt responsible and cared for all of them. In the coming days, she’d need to try extra hard to relieve whatever doubts Serenity had about her role and responsibility in this emerging Kingdom. They needed to work together and trust one another to truly keep the peace Serenity spoke of.

Joint Post of Makoto & Nephrite
Throughout the remainder of the performance, Nephrite kept watch over the brunette Princess, although her performance had shown such power and control; her mannerisms spoke of deeply rooted insecurities. Although he was sarcastic and lacking of focus at times, he was excellent at reading people, able to gain a healthy understanding of them, even from a distance. The way her bright gaze flickered about the room, the way she watched her fellow Guardian Princesses, with a forlorn guise hiding in those emerald green eyes that seized his nearly undivided attention. At the conclusion of Princess Venus’ performance, they all gathered to end the ceremony as a united team. It spoke of their bond, held an air of elegance and managed to be poetic all at the same time.
The music swelled as the Princesses returned to the ground. Nephrite’s dark blue gaze kept a steady gaze on the Jovian Princess, he’d been captivated by her routine and her insistence to shroud herself in darkness when her own element granted her such magnetic light. It was an interesting dynamic to say the least. The Princesses disappeared for a bit and he thrust his hands into his pockets and wandered about the grand ballroom for a few minutes, slowly allowing himself to draw nearer to the stage. The room spoke of understated power, as though it were telling the story of the Moon Kingdom in its walls. Elegant panels of white against white, extravagant, but not loud. This was a kingdom that held so much power in its grasp, yet longed to retain the knowledge of it from the universe. The thought was chilling.
An occasional glance up at Endymion and his demons was halfway amusing; until the man finally made up his mind and left the balcony, with a determination in his eyes that caused a short rush of worry to wash over him. Well, it was what they came here for, right? For their Prince to make peace with his Savior; the Princess of the Moon. They would not retract their promise to him, or rather, Kunzite’s promise to him. The Prince approached the ‘target’ and asked her for a dance, not before apparently terrifying her first. If Endymion was losing his charm through nervousness, then perhaps they truly had problems. It was a matter for another day. For now, the brunette man opted to make the most of his time here, instead. His gaze swept over the dancefloor and suddenly caught sight of her, leaned up against a wall. A grin crossed his lips as he noted the way she fidgeted and looked about the room, as though she were awaiting something. He finally caught the sparkling emerald gaze of the Jovian Princess.
Now that the active part of their festivities was done with, Mako’s mind had time to catch up with all the things she was otherwise concerned with. [She had taken her time changing and coming back out because she wasn’t particularly sure she wanted to come back just for an evening of shadow-casting.] Yet, it wasn’t like she didn’t want to be part of the fun, so she changed back into her ball gown with the help of her quickly-becoming “club” of maidservants and rejoined the festivities. She watched with a sad smile as men and women paired up and took to the dance floor, joining the ever-changing sway in the center. How she wanted to be out there too. But who could she ask? She could see the men hovering around Minako, and Ami, and even Rei (although Rei seemed quite put off by their attention), but the people she caught looking at her quickly averted their eyes. It was basically as she thought: They were interested in her as an oddity, and not as a woman.
But then something strange happened. A tall man with a cascade of brown hair caught her glance and didn’t look away. Not only that, he smiled and started coming toward her! The breath caught in her throat and she bit her lip, forcing down any hopeful expectations even as they pounded at her heart like an angry mob.
Approaching her, he bent formally at the waist and bowed deeply, before straightening and looking back down towards her. His tone was low and his voice effortlessly charming as he recited poetry to the Princess, “To capture lightning in a bottle would be as severe a transgression as stealing away the mystery of the dawning new day. Such an effect and we would lose the beauty of danger and the charm of the unknown…”
She dared not speak until the [upon further investigation] rather handsome man bowed to her and began reciting a rather corny poem. Mako would have groaned aloud in any other context, but the fact that he was reciting it to her as a compliment of sorts stole her criticism away. Instead, she felt a fierce blush erupt across her checks and down her neck.
The rose hue that swept across her face was all the encouragement Nephrite needed. Expression brightening as his lips curled into a grin, he nodded slightly, clearly pleased with her reaction to his corny poetry reading. In the pursuit of romance, there was occasionally a place for a well-recited poem. Politely extending his right hand to her, he spoke confidently, hoping to steal her first dance of the night, “Princess Jupiter, you seem so anxiously awaiting something tonight, allow me to steal you away for one dance first?”
Hold yourself together, Mako you dimwit, she chastised herself, if you screw this one up I won’t forgive you!
“I-It’s not like that…” she stammered all the same, “I w-was only waiting for..uh..you.” she ended with a smile that was supposed to be charming as she delivered the lamest poetic reply in the history of the Moon Kingdom.
Turning his head to the side slightly, he chuckled slightly, amused by her as his eyebrows lifted briefly in surprise at her nervous reaction. He quickly realized that even though she was beautiful, powerful and remarkable, that most were likely intimidated by her. Strong personalities were often associated with the creation of fear, a thought he didn’t relish, she was unique and remarkable, and these were qualities Nephrite had rarely seen in a woman.
“What I mean, rather…” she tried again rushedly, “Is yes.” She said before her breath ran out. She reached out and took his hand, hoping her nervous trembling didn’t transfer to his touch.
“Perfect.” Nephrite uttered as his white gloved hand closed firmly about hers, drawing her from the wall she’d been adorning with her presence. Soon they were poised in the middle of the dancefloor where she was back in the spotlight of sorts or at the very least, where the world could see her again. The music played a soft, enchanting melody, one that swept all the dancers into the dreamy dancing of the Moon Kingdom Ball. The entirety of the event was opulent, beautiful, with a warm charm about it. It was easy to fall under its spell, especially when he had a lovely woman at his hand.
Mako allowed herself to be drawn from her refuge feeling like she was floating. She kept her eyes on him, drinking in his features, still half-wondering if she was actually awake or if she was just dreaming up this man. He was exactly as she could hope: Taller than her, strong, charming, someone who would look at her and be able to disarm her completely. If she let go, would he vanish? Not that she could have: if she let go, her legs would likely have given way beneath her.
Nephrite paused, turning to face her, situating her hand firmly against his and gently reached for her waist with the other. The man drew her closer, a gentle smile touching his lips as began to sway his steps into the cadence of the waltz, hoping to ease her into following his lead.
Yet the dream continued. His masked face kept the illusion up. She wanted to reach up and remove it, if only to prove he was real. It was lucky for Mako that her martial training conditioned her body to follow the movements of another. She hadn’t uttered another word since he took her hand. She was still blushing and her eyes were distant and dreamy. She kept those eyes on his as he drew her close. His warmth was intoxicating. A feeling she wanted to savor and hoped would never end. She swayed with him, and her universe for the first time since her arrival felt at peace.
Glancing down at her, he leaned closer to drop his tone and whisper to her, “It’s a crime you know…” Pausing just long enough for dramatic effect, “For you to light up the room as you did only to then hide yourself in a corner.” Straightening, he pushed the emerald clad woman away from him, to twirl under his arm before bringing her back against his frame, he grinned, “See, you’re a natural at allowing the world to see you.”
His voice returned her to living reality. Unable to take the compliment easily, she averted her eyes, watching the shadow they cast as they danced. He twirled her, and the sensation was delightful. It was too good. How could something like this happen? She finally was getting her wish to dance, and now she was already worried about it being taken away from her. As she was brought back in, she finally found her voice, “Lightning is a funny thing,” she said looking back into his eyes, wanting to place her head against his broad chest but being too self-conscious to do so, “it only shows itself in flashes. Everyone is amazed by it in sparks, but if it were to stick around for too long, it would terrify people.” She looked away again, unable to maintain the contact, “Fire warms and water soothes, but lightning can only rend the sky and vanish, running from one end of the world to the other…making people glad it only came and went without stopping.”
The sound of her strong voice cut through, allowing his grin to remain firmly planted across his expression. Finally the woman spoke without nervousness tingeing her words; was he really so unique, so special, so unusual to have the Princess of Jupiter, Commander of Lightning itself unnerved? So quick to steal her gaze away from his; its effect causing the grin to lessen as he absorbed her words. Still she tried to hide, hiding behind sound reasoning perhaps, but hiding nonetheless. “Fire is something that we can all create at the hand of a tool and water is an abundant resource. Lightning is but a… phenomenon. Magic, if you will. It can stop one in their tracks…and yet despite its incredible power and danger, many have survived to speak of its beauty.”
Makoto was troubled by this new perspective. She knew somewhere in her gut that his words were affirming, comforting, but she still had the damnest time believing it. It wasn’t that she believed he was wrong, but that he was drawing the wrong conclusion. She was a phenomenon. Unique, special, and abnormal. Her uniqueness was something that had haunted her from her earliest days. Her tomboyishness railed against the way “Princesses” should act. Her strength and height against the ideal type of a woman. If not for her breasts, would anybody even suspect she was female? Those were the types of questions that plagued her. She wanted so often just to be normal. Become one of the girls. Be vulnerable and sensitive and “cute.” Perhaps it only was --
Releasing the hold on her waist, his left hand raised, his forefinger curling beneath her chin to draw those emerald eyes up to meet his gaze again. A tender smile crossed his lips, “Princess Jupiter, no need to hide from me, I won’t bite.” At the quip his eyebrows raised and set with subtle amusement before he continued, liberating her chin from his fingertip. His left hand moving to brush one of the mahogany curls that lay against her cheek back, before his hand returned to her waist. Their dance the backdrop to their conversation, he spoke after a moment, “Did you ever consider that the lightning is seen not only for its wonder, but also its mystery?” His hand tightened about hers, “Though many have tried and desired to, one cannot just ‘catch’ lightning. We find ourselves hypnotized by it, and yet? How does one catch something so fast, so brilliant, and so bright?”
Her breath caught in her throat again as he touched her face. It was something no man had ever dared to do. She stared back with eyes full of wonder and curiosity. This man was not intimidated by all the things she feared about herself. He seemed just as taken with her as she did with him. That thought struck like lightning across her senses. Could it be that this man, so confident in his charm, so handsome in his demeanor, was actually attracted to her? Could he really accept her? Her feelings and herself, or was she making too much out of the hammering in her heart? She had learned to mistrust that sensation for all the heartbreak it brought her. Nobody liked getting struck by lightning, no matter how beautiful the experience could be framed. Was he just here to ‘catch’ her too and then move on with his life? She was overthinking this. She was definitely overthinking this. But here he was, so close, so warm, and she wanted to weep for joy in the moment and frustration with her own twisted distrustful heart.
Nephrite’s dark blue eyes narrowed slightly as he questioned her, “How would one ‘catch’ someone as bright, as brilliant, as powerful as you, Princess Jupiter?” Confidence lingered in his tone, for he truly hoped to force her to realize that as intimidating as she may think the world saw her; he saw her as someone remarkable. As the music continued to propel their dance, the man’s arm moved about her back, testing her trust of him as he dipped her with the swell of the music. With her leaned back in his arm, the flush of her cheeks only serving to encourage him, his tone dropped again, “Are you so bound to your element that you choose to streak across the sky for but a fleeting moment and refuse to be caught…?” Pulling Makoto back to her mostly steady feet, he finished his question, “Or can one ‘catch’ you, Princess?”

[This is a joint post for Endymion and Serenity]
She didn’t feel the eyes of her guardians or the guards, or her mother who were probably all watching. All she heard and say was him. It was so freeing. She was losing track of time. It was fuzzy whether mere moments or large chunks of silence had passed between the two of them. “I’m sorry.” She finally said, letting out a large breath with a muted chuckle. Nothing could wipe away her sincere smile. “To meet you again.” Her mouth opened, another breath unleashed with obvious wonderment. “I didn’t think I’d ever see you again, but I’m glad you’re here. It just seems almost unreal, to travel all this way…” She confessed, her body turned and moved effortlessly with his. There was a simplicity to dancing with her, the lack of focus required to flow through the steps of the waltz; feeling the other’s steps as they took them. Something seemed to draw her back from her initial shock as she now matched him with that same fiery spirit that had captivated him in those first moments after the spar. Again, that warmth seemed to fill her, as if some lost part of her had come back and she was renewed and complete. Her weight shifted between her toes and the balls of her feet as she glided and turned in his arms. Thinking back to their encounter at Lake Kosuke, her cheeks flushed with a familiar crimson blush. “Perhaps it was not entirely simple. Kunzite had made a deal with me, prior to the spar. I got to choose our next endeavor; much to his chagrin, I chose to seek you out again.” She felt knocked sideways by the feelings embedded in her chest, by being in his presence. What were such feelings? She tried to remain calm and collected with him, only hoping to maintain his respect. It was an odd understanding; she desperately cared of his opinion of her. She hardly knew him, but she felt she could trust him unwaveringly. “Kunzite?” She questioned. “Is he one of your Generals?” She added. Realizing Endymion wasn’t the only visitor in her kingdom caused her to suck in an uncomfortable breath. If they were caught—she was unsure of what she could do to protect them. Realizing he’d only half explained who his generals were, he nodded, drawing her slightly closer and gently turning her with him to look about the ballroom. “Indeed, Kunzite is my top General and friend. Actually, they are all here. Quite taken by your lovely Guardians as it would seem.” The hand that held hers gestured gently in the direction of each pair as he introduced them from afar. “Nephrite is dancing with Princess Jupiter, Jadeite is attempting to charm Princess Mars, Zoisite is likely talking technology with Princess Mercury and Kunzite is conversing with Princess Venus.” “Oh yes—I remember now.” She said, tracing back the memory of the spar. “He’s the one you fought with in the final match, correct?” She recalled. At the mention of all four of his Generals being off with her Guardians, a deadpanned expression fell over her. “Seems rather ironic.” She muttered under her breath, thinking of how much some of them jabbed at her for going to Earth. Perhaps now they’d be more interested in a visit. It had all been worth it—the risk, the fears, the potential consequences that could still play out, his feeling like an inadequate friend and Prince. Just for this moment with her, holding her close, knowing she was safe and sound. Safer than he’d ever imagined with Four Guardian Princess’ to watch over her. “Aren’t you too much of a bad influence to ever be restricted by rules and oversight?” She questioned, some tinge of sadness slipped into her tone. He spoke of limited freedoms. “Still convinced I’m a bad influence?” He glared at her, attempting to show offense by her comment and failing. “Fine, perhaps I am, Princess. Generally speaking, yes. Although, I rather doubt they intend to leave me alone anytime soon.” At her implication of his ability to sneak away from his guards, he grinned slightly, amused by her faith. “If only they weren’t adapting so well to my ways… I could probably continue my streak.” He surmised that he’d have to get more creative in the coming days to garner any semblance of freedom. Freedom he’d spend figuring a way to see her again, if she’d have him. “Oh.” Her tone deflated. There was mortality to their time together and he had the same oversight and restrictions she had. Of course, how silly to think they could just continue to dance with no regrets. No rules. Just stay as long as they wanted, slow dancing together. “I’m glad you’re well…” She blushed, gaze falling from his for a moment. “And your citizen?” She questioned. His eyebrows raised and set at the recollection of their last moments together at Lake Kosuke. “I was unharmed thanks to your remarkable abilities. He was also without injury, surely thanks to you as well.” As he spoke of his citizen being healed, her lips pursed. “My abilities? Mm, you have no idea.” She nearly winced. “I’m not supposed to use them…I don’t even quite know how to…but…” She frowned, shrugging. “You’re lucky I was able to help you, but only because you supported me with your own powers.” She smiled with gratitude. Endymion’s expression faltered at her phrasing error, eyebrows furrowing in concern, “You mean your powers. For I had no powers to support you with.” His only power was the willingness to protect her from harm at all costs. He met her gaze again, taken aback by the gratefulness she was teeming with. It was difficult to explain. There was so much to say. “You really don’t know what powers you possess do you?” She questioned with a level of disbelief. “Your planet clearly speaks through you. I mean…” Her words trailed off as she thought internally for a time. She shouldn’t say anything more. There were reasons why the Moon and Earth were separate. Perhaps it was destiny that his light be locked away or unknown to him. Dark blue eyes widened at the implication before chuckling lightly. He shook his head slightly before speaking, “I… I’m not special like you are, Serenity.” Endymion took a deep breath and then sighed, smiling gently, “On Earth, we’re just… normal. Not remarkable like you and your Guardians.” He didn’t completely disagree with her, he felt his planets heartbeat and hoped every planet’s ruler could. “Endymion, you are extremely special.” She said sharply. “You’ve just never met anyone who can see and feel in you what I do.” She stressed. “It’s…difficult to explain.” “I saw it as you battled your General from afar—and when we were at Lake Kosuke—…near you…your light was brilliantly apparent. Powers are like a muscle, you have to work and seek to understand them before you can ever flex.” She advised, but quickly recoiled in his arms, lips pursed. “I don’t know if I should have even told you that…but deep within you resides so much more than you even realize.” She urged. “Do you believe me?” She questioned. The intensity of her tone made him grow quiet as he listened to her. His gaze narrowed as he glanced away to absorb her words. The whole idea sounded ridiculous, and he wasn’t convinced her amazing display of powers hadn’t healed the man. Looking back to her, he frowned before looking deep into her eyes, seeing the belief she held in him and realizing something more important in that moment. She had absolutely no reason to deceive him. “What you say sounds so … strange.” He sighed again, his shoulders shrugging slightly. “You are the most intriguing woman I’ve ever met…” “Isn’t this all strange to you?” She nearly grinned. “Until recently, wasn’t your whole world Earth? Now it seems much larger and more foreign. It must be overwhelming to you.” She mentioned gently. At his last comment, she blushed feverously. “Uh, you’re being kind. I’m sure you’ve met many fascinating people on your planet.” He stared at her, taking another deep breath before responding, realizing that deep in his heart, he could believe in whatever potential she saw in him; even if he didn’t see it himself. “I do believe you, Serenity.” “Ah, apologies for my continued informality, Princess.” A striking emotion crossed over him for the second time this night. He truly didn’t care what her title was. Damn the consequences. A wry smirk tugged at his lips, as his gaze narrowed slightly, “Such an interesting and minor detail to leave out…” “Well, you so clearly hated formality.” She winced. “I didn’t think it important at the time.” She said coyly, as if she were that same stranger on Earth, rather than a Princess. She drew closer to him while the orchestra began to play a new song.
“Hmm.” Amusement crossed his expression, although the way she drew nearer made his heart race again, threatening to throw his composure out the window. Clearing his throat, he continued, “Ah, yes, The Princess of the Moon… when has that ever not been an important detail in your life?” She gripped his shoulder fiercely as they continued on. It was all sinking in—he knew exactly who she was, and yet he was there. “I’m sorry if I deceived you…in coming to your planet uninvited…” she managed. Her eyes filled with sincerity, and it was clear she was weighing her next words carefully: “Forgive me. From the spar, I could tell you were humble and perhaps that you do what’s right and necessary for your Kingdom. As an outsider, I thought if you knew who I was, you’d have me sent back here…I know I shouldn’t have mislead you.” She paused, her fingertips slid against his own as she readjusted her hold of his hand. “But, how could I deny you the same escape I was looking for? “She questioned, her gaze intensely focused on his, seeking his understanding. His dynamic shifted immediately, as a genuine guilt seemed to steal her joy. Taking a clear note of the worry that crossed her forehead, his expression softened before drawing his face closer to hers. “Perhaps you misunderstood me in that moment.” He paused, hoping to be direct, “I took advantage of the situation and opted to run away as well.” Snickering slightly, he carefully selected his words, “I suppose I should have figured you were Royalty. Your understanding was far too great to have not been from experience. However, I chose to steal away because I was fascinated… by you.” “Oh, well I...” Her lips parted, tone inflected upward at the end of her statement, and hand trembled within his own. His words were hard to process. Such words were foreign to her. She almost thought she was misunderstanding, or not listening correctly. She didn’t know what to say. Most stayed far from her, frightened at her duties and responsibility. He was a kindred spirit. There was a pounding rush within her. She wanted to hold onto this moment, to find a way and the time that he could stay within, freely. Her chin lowered, eyes grew serious. “We’ll never find what we’re chasing slowed down by our roles, responsibilities, and…as you say…keepers.” She frowned. Her eyes sparkled. “I will say, it was supremely freeing to shake loose of all that and just…be…for a time.” Sighing deeply, he used the moment to collect his thoughts, as the rosy hue of her face darkened, clearly revealed her emotions to him. His voice dropping to a low, calm whisper, “What kind of a humble Prince would I be to judge a Princess for wanting to escape? I… I never would turn you away.” It felt like too much, but she deserved his honesty, especially with his knowledge that seeing her again would be unlikely.
“Endymion, I…” There was so much she wanted to say to him, yet what good would it do to say any of it. “Why are you here? It’s a long way to come for a dance and conversation.” The words tumbled out, a torn tension filling the silence between them. The warmth of her in his arms filled him with confidence, even though the intensity of her gaze made his breath catch in his throat. Endymion leaned down, drawing close enough to her ear to whisper, “I should think it would be quite obvious, My Lady…” Straightening, he met her passionate gaze once again, “I had to see you again.” Her head and heart were at odds, spinning and burning together. Suddenly, it was difficult to breathe. Glancing away slightly, that guilt clawing at him once again, his hand gripped hers a bit more tightly, as though to remind himself that she was there. “To be rendered unable to help you twice was a painful enough reality. The burden of not knowing if you were alright after you were taken? It was too much to bear...” He was being careful and polite. It was clear to her now, it all made sense. He was being dutiful. There was finality in his words. She felt and saw it now. A bleak expression washed over her features. “You were worried about me...it’s polite of you to ensure my safety.” Her abrupt change perplexed him; he wasn’t even sure how to explain himself to her without sounded desperate. He knew he was desperate by the way his chest tightened with the unfamiliar pragmatic tone she now carried. Leaning forward, he opened his mouth to protest. She suddenly lifted her hand, placing a set of fingertips over his lips and shook her head, stopping in place. “But, you won’t be seeing me again, correct?” Her words trailed off. It was all too complicated. She was so foolish and naive. She’d never see him again and she needed to accept that reality. She had been ready to let go, but over the course of the evening she fooled herself into thinking it was possible. That somehow, all the risks and insanity were worth achieving the impossible. It was for the best, she tried to rationalize, but she lacked such rationale. Duty stole his joy in that moment. Her words sounded correct, they sounded like exactly what his Generals would want to hear from him. That this was it and he’d never seek her out again. His heart sank, realizing he should accept what she was saying and submit to the roles they were both born to. It was a ridiculous notion, The Prince of Earth and the Princess of the Moon seeking out the other. As proper as it was, he hated the idea. No other person had ever invigorated him like this. No one had ever made him feel alive. In so few moments with her, she’d shown him pieces of himself he didn’t even know existed. How was he to throw that all away out of practicality? “…It’s okay. I’d never been away from this palace, and in a short time, you opened my eyes to a lot. The wind, the trees…the sun…I’ll never forget it.” She swallowed, as if trying to put on a strong face and reign in her emotions. “Endymion, may I show you something?” She asked as they stood still together, a fragile, porcelain smile crossed her features. She was prepared to make the most of the time she had with him.
Swallowing hard, he tried to accept that this was what she wanted. That she was a more honorable monarch than he—that her wisdom allowed her to make the right choice. He smiled weakly, and nodded. He slowly released his grip upon her waist, but firmly continued to hold her hand, as though she would slip through his fingertips a moment earlier. His voice was controlled, fighting the emotions that raged beneath the surface, able to be proper for her. “Of course Serenity.” She turned as he released his hold about her waist. Her right shoulder jerked backward and her upper body contorted lower as she squeezed his hand, weaving in and around the dancing couples. It reminded her of their quick dash through the alleyways on Earth to Lake Kosuke. Serenity took in a deep breath as her gaze rose to meet one of the guards posted in front of what seemed a rather quiet and open balcony space. “Evening Edward.” Serenity nodded casually, tugging Endymion along. “Privacy please.” She asked him as she walked by gracefully and calmly. Her request was that others not be allowed on this balcony for a time, but her wishes were not always met. If it were slipping away, she wanted a brief moment…whatever moment she could have to speak freely with him.

[This is a joint post for Rei and Jadeite]
To say Jadeite was glowing would be an understatement. He strode onto the dance floor, chest puffed out with pride. His hold of her hand was delicate and controlled, and he knew he had her attentions by a thin thread. He extended his arm slightly, allowing her to claim the space on the floor she preferred before pulling her nearer. He slipped his arm tenderly about her waist and squeezed her hand to readjust his grip about her own. Rei frowned slightly as he ushered her onto the dance floor. This was the exact thing she didn't want, yet here she was being led into the spotlight by a handsome young man who was clearly very proud of himself. Bastard. She opted for a space on the outer most edge of the crowd, hoping it would allot them a degree of privacy so they could continue their talk. Her eyes darted quickly across the faces of the crowd and she saw several people looking at them and whispering quietly to each other. She could only imagine the things they were saying, but she continued to hold her head high. Let them whisper. It changed nothing. Her icy demeanor nearly shattered as she felt his arm slide around her waist, his hand lightly gripping hers, as she was nearly overcome with the sudden realization that she had never been in a man's arms before. She took a deep breath to calm her suddenly racing heart, but could not stop the soft rose tint that dusted her cheeks. Once again in control of herself, she gently rested her free hand on his shoulder and began to dance.
He wondered how many onlookers seethed with jealousy of this moment, his moment of triumph. He was quite proud of winning this particular dance. And if nothing more than this moment, he’d keep to himself that this Moon ball was a heck of a lot more interesting than what he’d experienced back home on Earth—even if this woman was the one thing that set the two apart. “So Princess,” He began again casually. “Tell me what you see in me.” He asked of her again, smoothly flicking his wrist as he let her spin out of his arms for respite before pulling her back close to him for his answer. A finely arched onyx eyebrow raised as he once again asked his brazen question, her hair dancing about her shoulders and the lower part of her skirt fluttering as she spun away, then back into his arms again. Her ruby lips curved into a grin as her eyes studied this man who only seemed to become more perplexing the more she spoke with him. She also might have been enjoying the dance. Just a little. "I would call you a strange man, but that would be a vast understatement. What you ask is the thing people fear most about me, yet you are completely unafraid. Are you certain you want to know?" “Strange an understatement?” He quipped. “I hope you’ll find some word that borders on a compliment.” He ventured to say. It was a shame that they’d have to stop playing their game soon enough. He preferred this character that was far closer to his real self than he let many experience. Of course, she didn’t know that. She never would. He didn’t waste time looking at the others anymore. He was transfixed on her. “Why shouldn’t I want to know? What fear should I have?” He said, tone growing serious. “My fate is already sealed, no matter what you say, correct? So, what’s the harm in knowing something already assured?” He mused, internally lightening up his own dark humor. Perhaps she’d need another carrot to release the information she had. “Do you know who Princess Serenity is dancing with?” He questioned calmly, motioning to the other dancing couple with his emerald eyes. Her deep purple orbs followed his gaze where they rested on the young couple dancing as though they were the only people in the room. Her gaze suddenly became distant as she was overcome with a brief vision of a lake that reflected the moon on it's surface. "The lake..." she murmured through gently parted lips. The Princess of Mars took in a quick breath as she snapped back into reality. Perhaps it was because she was so close to one of its sources but suddenly everything about the strange energy came into focus.
“Eh?” His broad shoulders rose, an eyebrow flickered in unrest at her momentary detachment from him. “Did you say something?” Lines on his forehead came into view as his chin dipped lower and eyebrows furrowed at her muttered statement. "That's him," she said, her grin returning as she shook her head. Her gaze returned to him but she continued to shake her head. She had him now. "I will answer your second question while also answering part of the first." She leaned closer to him, assuring that only he could hear her speak, and whispered, her voice just barely audible above the music. Her eyes locked onto his, holding his sparkling emerald gaze as she spoke.
He blinked uncomfortably. Next, his fingertips began to fidget against her grasp involuntarily. The tables had turned. This was a woman, blazing with confidence. Unbeknownst to him, the card he was hoping to keep her at bay with was his own undoing. "That young man is the real reason you and the other three men are here. Don't worry, I sense that none of you has any ill will toward my Princess nor anyone else here, which is why you are dancing with me and not the guards. As for the young man, I see that he is very important to you; a friend, a brother, a comrade, someone you protect. As I am a guardian to Serenity, you are a guardian to him. Though you are ingrained with a deep sense of honor and duty, you are here protecting him because he is dear to you and because, more than anything, you want him to enjoy the freedom you will never know." He was silent for a moment, mouth slightly open. He tried to swallow away the dry feeling at the back of his throat. “You are…unlike anyone I’ve ever met.” He said suddenly and softly, his tone revealing how mystified he was in her presence. “And while you’re skills are impressive, they don’t hold a candle to your glowing confidence.” He smiled lightly. He took in a breath, reminding himself that he had to keep his own. Now, there was no game. He was just talking. “I don’t think the guards would be half as much fun to dance with, and the interaction would certainly lack interesting conversation as well.” He grinned, remaining steadfast in his playful nature with her. Deep in the pit of his stomach, her final statement bolted around like lightening —enjoy the freedom you will never know— but perhaps, with her, he finally had a sense of what Endymion’s doting fuss was all about. She leaned back slightly and though her eyes never left his, her features softened if only a little. "I see in you that we have something in common, which is one of the things that intrigued me. But before I continue, I would like to know your name. You know mine, it seems only fair. I would also like to know more about the young man dancing with my Princess."
Her smile was warm and confident. She was starting to enjoy this game. “Ah, then you don’t know everything?” He questioned, tilting his head to the side with intrigue. Her confident smile formed into a grin as she tilted her slightly. "Well, I'm not perfect, but I'm getting there." The side of his chin brushed against her flushed cheek as he whispered in her ear. The sensation of his face brushing against hers sent shivers down her spine. His warm breath caressing her ear as he whispered ignited a fire in her that burned like nothing she had ever felt before. It excited and terrified her at the same time. This... was cheating. “Names are of little importance, Princess. It’s titles that matter in our day and age. That man is the Crown Prince of Earth, Endymion. And yes,” he nearly cooed into her ear as his hand firmly grasped hers to ensure she wouldn’t flinch away from their conversation, “I’m one of his guardians. Perhaps, a foolish guardian to let him jaunt all this way, to hunt down a girl he’s so taken with.” He leaned away from her, taking in a careful breath. His words washed over her like a much needed bucket of ice water. The Crown Prince of Earth. Her shoulders sunk slightly and her head hung forward, inadvertently colliding with his shoulder. She then lulled her head back and released a heavy sigh. "Of course he is. What else would he possibly be." It was more of a statement than a question. Shaking her head again, she regained her composure, her grin returning to her face.
His lips curved upward in a smirk, watching her strong façade crumble, if only briefly. She was quick to piece it back together. “Your Princess forgot to mention her station to my friend. We were all quite surprised to learn who she really was. But, you are right, we mean no harm to any one here.” He said seriously, shaking his head, his wavy yellow locks bouncing out of his gaze. His shoulders lowered down, showing his calm composure. "Though I suppose it would be hypocritical of me to label you foolish when here I am dancing with you when I should be marching over there and dragging her away by the elbow." “There’s a lot we as guardians should be doing, it seems that we’re all on the same page. We care more about their happiness than putting them in their tight boxes of duty and responsibility.” He offered. It seemed there were many similarities between this planet’s guardians and Earth’s. “Hm. Your Princess is your friend.” He said aloud, as if to communicate to her what he had confirmed independently in his head. Unable to stop herself, Rei let out a gentle, genuine laugh. The situation as a whole was so utterly ridiculous that she could think of no better way to voice her frustration. Other than yelling, of course. After a moment, she sighed and exhaled slowly, her eyes downcast. "Yes, she is not just my charge, she is my friend. Strange thing, fate." “So, all you really see is a strange man?” He frowned. “What about a strange man you’re enjoying having a dance with?” He grinned casually, before his facial expression settled into a soft and sincere smile. He too had his own confidence with her. Her eyes met his again and without intending to, she felt her face mirror his in a soft and sincere smile. It was the first time she had done it since before the presentation and the first time she had shown it to anyone other than her friends. "I suppose it isn't awful," she said, her smile turning into a grin, "but I wouldn't expect something like this to happen, if we should meet again." “Would it be so terrible if we did meet again?” He huffed. “I could show you something different than a dance.” He offered. “Perhaps a lesson in advanced archery? That would complement the abilities you already have. You might think you’re already strong with a bow, if your culture is in to that sort of sport. I hardly believe you could be beat me in precision and speed, however.” He continued to challenge, leaning his face nearer to hers. Her wicked grin nearly took in her ears.
"Are you challenging me? I'll have you know you are dancing with the current Champion of Archery on Mars! But I would love nothing more than to show you what real speed and precision looks like."
Despite her words, she was actually enjoying herself. What was it about this man that she couldn't help but find herself comfortable in his presence? "So, fearless Guardian who refuses to tell me his name, shall I continue to tell you what I see in you, or have I taken enough of the breath from your lungs?" “I think I have more life in me yet to withstand your prophecy of me.” He grinned. “But first,” he said, adjusting his hold about her waist, pulling her closer. “Why did your Princess come to Earth?” He paused, his gloved thumb hovered gently over the woman’s cheek, “I don’t mean to take advantage of your knowledge. I’m not here to learn secrets of this Kingdom.” He admitted.
She felt his arm move about her waist, drawing her closer to him. She drew in a sharp breath and opened her mouth to speak, but he continued.
“I just…” He paused, lips pursed as he uncomfortably found himself growing serious with her.
“Endymion’s my friend, too. He’s my family. He’s stronger than anyone I know — a just and elite warrior. But,…you’re friend…” His thumb curved gently against her soft skin, brushing away away an arrant strand of hair from her face before he continued. “…she could hurt him. I’ve never seen him act or speak of someone like he has her.” He let out a careful breath, lifting his shoulders, as if the action would help him shake away such serious nonsense.
Rei was completely taken aback by his sudden change in tone. The way he caressed her face, the look in his eyes, this was no longer a game. He was pleading with her and in that act, showing her his deepest devotion, his true self. At that moment, Rei felt her ice begin to melt. Slowly, gently her hand reached up and the tips of her delicate fingers pressed against his lips, caressing them softly. Her eyes locked on to his, holding his gaze as she tilted her head towards him. She didn't want him to speak anymore. She wanted him to listen. She wanted him to hear her truth.
"Serenity is the kindest, gentlest soul I have ever known. She would never, never, hurt anyone. You have nothing to fear from her. As for why she fled to Earth, she was curious and needed a moments reprieve. She never intended to catch someone's eye. She doesn't have a cruel bone in her body. That's why she has me. I am the one who is cold and cruel for her."
Her fingers slowly slid from his lips and down his chin before slipping away from his face and gripping his hand once again. Her dark confession brought a hint of sadness to her features for a moment, but she quickly pushed it away. Instead she now focused on continuing her prophecy.
"You are fiercely loyal to those you care about most and with that loyalty comes compassion that knows no bounds. You would gladly give of yourself for the sake of those dear to you and suffer consequence alone, all the while masking your pain with your smile and your charm. And you would let them label you a fool before allowing a single crack in that mask. It is a deeply admirable quality and those whom you love should count themselves fortunate to have someone like you in their lives."
In the background, she heard the music shift. Their dance was over, yet she showed no sings of stopping. She was honestly enjoying his company and had no desire to end their talk.
He smiled from ear to ear, not at the fact that he had moved on and reclaimed his humor. No. The orchestra had officially moved on to the next dance; yet, there they were, moving seamlessly with one another on the floor. He didn’t even have to manipulate an extra dance out of her. Now, he was sure she was giving up her time freely.

Her lips formed a soft smile as they danced. There was one more part to her prophecy. Would he want to hear it?
"I have told you of what I see, but my prophecy has a final chapter. Do you still want me to continue?"

The look of shock on people's faces when the Time Guardian revealed who she was never ceased to amuse her. To most, she was nothing more than a legend; a rumor; a ghost. To someone with a practical and scientific mind like Ami, to be faced with someone who had control over something as intangible as time must have had her reeling. Setsuna couldn't help but wonder what the Princess of Mercury would think if she ever met Princess Hotaru.
And there it was. The reason the Guardian of Time seldom interacted with others. Once they found out about her ability, everyone wanted to know how it worked or what she saw, or what the future held for them and there was no answer she could give that would be satisfactory. She couldn't begrudge Ami for her curiosity, though. That insatiable curiosity was the reason why the Mercurian culture was the most advanced in the galaxy. Thankfully, she would not have to answer.
A young man approached, introduced himself as Zoisite, and asked Ami to dance, sending the Princess of Mercury into a flutter of embarrassment. Setsuna couldn't help but be a little amused. Her amethyst eyes studied the young man for a moment and found her centuries of maintaining unreadable composure briefly put to the test. Such a sad and terrible fate.
Her eyes sparkled with mirth at the utter absurdity of his question.
"It is a pleasure to meet you as well, Zoisite, and no, I will not be presenting myself to the court. Certainly not in the manner in which Princess Ami and the others were presented. If I did, no one would remember it!"
Humor was not her strong suit, but the Time Guardian made the effort anyway.
"Princess Ami, I believe this young man asked you for a dance, so I will take my leave. Please enjoy yourselves," she said nodding to both of them.
She then turned and plunged into the crowd, her form seeming to disappear as she moved like a shadow among the party goers. Please enjoy yourselves... while you still can she thought to herself as she moved away from the young couple. As her eyes studied the threads of time that danced around her, she saw that her reason for attending the party was drawing near. She moved into position and waited for the moment when everything would align and she would be able to interact with everyone. Inhaling and exhaling slowly, the Guardian of Time focused herself. She would only get one chance to set things right.

[This is a joint post for Kunzite and Minako]
She opened her mouth to press on for his response, but inhaled a sharp breath at the feeling of his hand about her own. It was the first time her widened eyes left his gaze. She looked at his hand wrapped so carefully about hers. His words seemed kind enough. Her lips rubbed together and parted as she directed her gaze back to his. She weighed this stranger—his words, his demeanor, her mood that evening. This was a decision she made alone. And, if this man betrayed her trust, she swore she’d hunt him down with all the others. That would be her compromise. "You shouldn't be here, but you are. So, enjoy your time." She said, gently pulling her hand away from his and bowing her head to allow him to go back to his post and watch on. She turned away from him, but head curved about, gaze rose to meet his, lips curved in a gentle expression. “Similar to you, Kunzite, My Lady is my dearest friend. Neither I nor any of her guardians would choose to stomp on her happiness. But, tread carefully.” She advised, a glimmer of warning in her gaze and a smile of understanding. Kunzite was a little surprised at how easily she gave them a pass. He couldn’t help but wonder if she would quietly betray them, but she had been remarkably straightforward with him about her thoughts and feelings on this rather complex matter. Truthfully, it was actually….refreshing, such a difference from all the subtle politics and mind games he had been playing with himself since before they even left Earth. He nodded to her, her warning ringing true, before turning his gaze back on Endymion. He felt his expression fade to sullenness. The Prince was all smiles and peace, oblivious to the victory Kunzite had just won for his sake. He stole a look back at Minako as she was beginning to walk away. He looked back at Endymion again and felt his expression sour. To hell with Endymion and his nine clouds, he wanted a little bit more of that fresh air, “Pardon me, Princess,” he coughed lightly to get her attention again, “I do believe you asked me for a dance, and a man of honor does not decline such an invitation lightly. Would you do me the honor?” he asked, reaching out his hand toward her. “Wha?” She turned about slowly, running a hand over the fabric of her sleeve awkwardly. For all her forward tactics and strong words, she remained frozen for a moment. “You don’t seem the dancing type.” She judged, shrugging her shoulders with a coy blush. “Is there more to you than meets the eye, Lead General from Earth?” She questioned softly, taking a few careful steps toward him, head tilted to the side and eyes smiling. Kunzite smiled with some sincerity…the weight of the burden of not being found out strangely relieved by someone who could end their lives finding out and choosing not to, “I thought it would already be obvious that I play my cards very close to my chest, Princess.” She extended her hand forward to meet his. “So, tell me more about your Prince and Earth. And, if you’re willing to continue your brief streak of honesty, what did you think or learn from the presentation ceremony? You seem to have had your fill of the Moon.” She rose a brow playfully. “Hardly. It was simply difficult to enjoy while worrying for the safety of my Prince and comrades. But for your honesty with me, I am willing to return the favor.” He said as he led her out onto the dance floor. Lifting their already grasped hands up, he placed his free hand on the small of her back as they joined the sway of the music. She turned gracefully, with the same fluid strength shown in her presentation. Her hold of his hand was firm and controlled and the frame of her arms were graceful and unbreakable. "Kunzite, we have no reason to bring any of your men, nor your Prince harm. You have my word. Serenity spoke fondly of Earth. She was quite complementary of your Prince. And, as I understand it, he protected her from harm while we were not there. I'm very grateful for that."
“And I am thankful to you for you remittable of swift justice upon us trespassers; it was a heavy weight upon my mind. But, as far as Endymion goes…that is his character. He would willingly give his life to protect another. And I can only expect that sense is heightened for your Princess. If any harm would come to her in his presence, it would be after his own death too. That I promise you.” “Your presentations were astounding,” Kunzite said with irony in his voice, “I thought they meant the death of us all. I was ready to call this whole operation off until my right hand man reminded me of my promise to Endymion. Of course, he may have said that just so he could enjoy himself. Last I saw him he was warming himself up to the Princess of Mars.” Kunzite shook his head with a kind of fond exasperation, “And yet, it was quite obvious that Princess Serenity cares deeply for each of you. Even a man-at-arms like me could see that. We are not used to such intimacy in the Earth Court. By contrast…” he continued, taking a deep breath as if it was difficult for him to even have an easy and unguarded conversation such as this, “ Earth certainly doesn’t have this level of cultural refinement, but it’s natural beauty is unsurpassed and I do believe in the strength of its people…those who can think outside of their cups and coin, at least.” Kunzite glanced back at Endymion and Serenity dancing like they had forgotten the world existed, before returning his gaze to his own dance partner, “But that is where Endymion is the jewel of our nation. He is refined, intelligent, farsighted, and compassionate. As I have said before, I am…or, perhaps now I should say was, his caretaker. I trained him in swordsmanship and discipline and have acted as an adviser and mentor to him for years. Until even yesterday, he rarely thought about himself but performed his duties admirably with only thoughts of being of help to others. He has grown into a man of superb character and I have no doubt he will lead Earth down the path of peace and prosperity. Even if my generals think me too soft or too proud for keeping my word to Endymion, it is worth it to see him seize his own destiny.” “Do you not work as a unit? With your fellow comrades?” She questioned. “Although each of Serenity’s guardians hail from different planets, we’ve grown up together in some respects. We’ve known our duties and responsibilities since we were very young. I’ve trained all my life for this moment.” She said simply, shifting the weight from the balls of her feet to her heels before she turned in his arms. “I may disagree with my fellow Princesses, but even as their leader, I make no decisions alone. I also never go against the will of the majority of the group.” She frowned, realizing the greater consequences those decisions could have now.
“We work together, yes, but I am their leader. I listen to their counsel and opinions, but the responsibility ultimately rests with me. Like this trip: They were all opposed, but they placed their lives in my hands all the same. It was my connections that made this possible, my leadership that planned it out, and my sin if I do not return them all home again safe. I understand your will to do right by your fellow guardians, but I can only accept responsibility for my own decisions, not theirs.” He spoke all of this his typical slow and deliberate manner, but there was life to his speech was wasn’t as usual. Whether it was for the topic or the company was a mystery even to him. Still, he felt embarrassed by his open show of admiration and moved to change the focus, “And what of your Princess Serenity? You mentioned she is overly trusting. That certainly explains to me the jovial nature of this ball. She seems too concerned for your happiness to be much a troublemaker, no? Why come to earth if it would cause such a divide in your circle?” Minako’s head slumped at his statement and her brow furrowed. “S-Serenity?” She nearly chuckled, stumbling over her words. “She’s a free spirit trapped in a Princess’ body. She never slows down for anyone or anything.” She said with an exasperated expression. “Hm. Regarding Earth, she’s always admired your home planet. When we were children, she’d demand we pretend we were on Earth, enjoying a fresh breeze among flowers and trees. Those things don’t exist on the Moon. Well, I mean, the Queen has worked to construct replicas here, but that’s not enough for Serenity. I never thought she’d actually try to go to Earth, however.” She mused. Kunzite enjoyed sharing in the exasperations of a kindred soul. Or was it just having an open and honest conversation? Or was it just learning more about this fascinating Princess from a distant planet? Regardless, Kunzite wasn’t reflecting on that. He was reflecting on what Minako had to say about the Moon Princess and her kingdom. There were plenty of comparisons and contrasts to be made. Between Earth and the Moon, and their respective royalty. He chuckled subtly, “A difficult Monarch, indeed. Like Endymion’s choice to leave with your Princess without speaking to any of us. I thought him mobbed and captured, if not worse.” Kunzite sighed, remembering how foolishly his heart had raced when they had lost sight of the Prince, “It was that experience that made me reconsider if I am too protective of the Prince…” “Let me ask you this, Kunzite: Would you lay down your life for another planet? Even if you knew nothing about it or its people—just because you could help?” She rose a brow, lifting her chin with interest. For the first time in quite awhile, she showed renewed confidence and spry spirit. “Serenity would do it in a heartbeat. That’s her responsibility and role, if necessary. She’d be anyone’s friend and always do whatever she could to support those around her.” She confessed with bemused pride. “Fascinating…” Kunzite said, trying to take in what that kind of attitude looked like. It sounded ominously dangerous. How could she best serve her people if she was a bleeding heart to anyone who uttered a cry? She would spend herself too quickly, like a firecracker. It was hard to fathom, “I would willingly lay my life down for my Prince, for his honor, his desires, and the Earth, yes…but to cast my life aside for just anyone…no, I don’t think I could.” he tightened his expression. Part of it sounded like utter foolishness, but his honor seemed to detect something beautiful in that utter selflessness. It sounds like something only a goddess could live up to, though… Kunzite pondered in thought, Can a person truly be capable of that level of that level of detachment? To forsake one’s world, one’s friends, one’s oathbound for complete strangers? “Serenity said your...Prince is a great warrior; so he’s allowed to fight for his Kingdom I imagine? The Queen has fashioned a pacifist culture, and she’s a woman who is staunchly aligned with the traditional laws. And yet, there are many who would love a chance to use what this Kingdom has as a most powerful weapon to foster war and seize power. That's why the Queen's meticulous in the supervision of her daughter, and she should be." “It is a heavy burden, no doubt,” he said, sensing similarities to his own way of thinking even as he noticed the nuances he had been slowly unfolding these past few days, “But isn’t that also why the Princess should be trained to be strong? The power hungry will not be held off by laws and threats alone. That is why you are here, is it not? A future Queen should be the strength of her people, even as Endymion is my hope for the strength of the people of Earth. Stifled, their flame is like to be put out…” he left the comment hang in the air. He did not mean to lecture, but the conversation lent itself to his own trying to reconcile what he expected of Endymion. Her next words just proved he was still unsettled in his opinion. “Serenity’s an endless pit of power and energy, yet she hasn’t been given the opportunity to embrace what she has. It’s not her time yet. She’s defined by everyone around her for a part of herself she’s not even allowed to understand. I’m sure that’s a heavy and even scary weight. She doesn’t want to be protected. She wants to protect others. I think she went to Earth to prove she could stand alone. Instead, she happened on someone who I imagine is quite like her.” She ventured to guess.
“Too much so.” Said Kunzite in reply, the mirth subtly draining from his voice. He could hear Endymion in Minako’s description, and that frightened him. Two kindred souls had met, sharing similar burdens and longings, and they would feed off each other. Kunzite thought of how Endymion had changed since he first met Serenity. The risks, the madness, the passion. If it persisted, what would it lead to? He could hear Jadiete chiding him for realizing the obvious, but they had known nothing about Serenity when they came here, but for the first time he realized the Princess was so much more dangerous than the Queen. The regrets that he had kept stonewalled behind duty resurfaced, making him wonder how great a blunder he had wrought. Would Endymion allow his passion to get the better of all his years of training and diligence? “But, that’s why those types of trips are dangerous. What if something happened to her? What if Serenity and her untapped power got caught up in the wrong hands? You understand the chaos she could wield?” She didn’t want to say too much to Kunzite, and while she didn’t want to frighten him, a part of her thought this information might help in separating the complications that united two Kingdoms that were siloed by ancient law. “Of course” He replied. Truly, what else could he say? He saw the magnificence of the Moon, and while it may or may not be propped up by the richness of the Earth, the four guardians of the Princess could be enough to topple the entire military of the Earth Kingdom. But that wasn’t at the heart of her message, “You need not sell me on the importance of keeping your Princess off Earth. I needn’t remind you that she came to us first, after all.” The comment was likely unwarranted, but slipped out all the same. He was feeling bruised when the conversation turned to this budding relationship between their Prince and Princess. For all his talk of wanting Endymion to come into his own, he was still defensive of the Prince and was willing to get in his way to defend him from himself. “Maybe I’m not too different from the Queen after all…” he murmured. Her gaze narrowed. “This isn’t a spitting match.” She said sullenly. “You walked into this Kingdom with clear judgments that it was pretentious and you have baseless assumptions of it being an enemy.” She said coolly. “All I hope you walk away with tonight is understanding. I’m still getting adjusted to this Court, but like Earth, it has endless ears and eyes. And from what I gather, Serenity was standing up to a very intimidating figure. Something about an invitation to a spar match on Earth…” She tilted her head looking for some sign that he the event meant something to him. “She wanted to attend. She wanted to be visible. She wanted to openly show support to your planet. She wants the walls between them to come down, because they are silly.” She closed her eyes for a moment, pausing for a breath. “I hope you walk away tonight knowing who cares for your planet and who your real ally is.” She added, the tension in her arms building with the passion of her words. “My apologies, Princess,” he answered to her offense. It seemed sudden an unwarranted to him. Or maybe he was loosening his guard too much to think she wouldn’t take it as an insult. Either way, she read him correctly, and he didn’t feel there was a need to hide that, “You are correct. All I knew of the Moon before coming here was that it was cold and distant, yet demanded our tribute and cooperation. I fully expected to walk into a den of vipers when we stepped off that ship. All I know is of Earth, of power plays, and politics, and danger. I am a man used to keeping a close guard for my protection and for the protection of my kingdom. I make no excuses for how barbaric I appear to you. All I hope is that you understand I would have said none of that if I still considered you an enemy.” He paused for a moment to see if his apology had affected anything, and then continued, “I sent that invitation myself. I’ve sent many over the years…part of the formal courtesy that I was taught the Moon Court expects. The event was an open tournament for the Court nobility. It is something that occurs on an annual basis, but this year was special because of the Prince’s involvement.” “Who would have guessed that the Moon Princess herself would have actually taken to responding to that invitation? But now, I wonder if it might not be in our best interest to cooperate and make the best of this that we can.” He said, a firm smile tinged with sadness crossing his features. My Prince, I do hope you will forgive me. It is for the good of the Realm.

[This is a joint post for Endymion and Serenity]
Wordlessly he followed her, unsure of where their path through the crowds of people was taking them. Glancing towards Kunzite, who remained distracted by Princess Venus, he surmised that perhaps they’d truly have a moment alone.
A glimmer of apprehension remained over her eyes as she ruffled her hands over the front of her dress, letting out the breath. Jaunting about with the Prince of Earth so clearly in the open had to come with eventual consequences.
As they passed the guard, he diverted the gaze wondering what the loyal guard assumed of him. The temperature outside struck him as so strange for this time of year, clear that the Moon had different seasonal cycles than Earth.
From behind him, she placed her hands firmly on Endymion’s shoulders, pressing and directing his stance. She stood on her tip toes, neck craning forward as her chin rested along his shoulder.
Without pause Serenity was suddenly repositioning him as she saw fit, he responded hastily to her movements with furrowed brows, attempting to figure her out. There was no figuring her out.
Her shoulders rose toward her ears as she jerked him into place. “For a calm and confident Prince, you’re quite fidgety.” She chuckled.
He inhaled sharply feeling her chin rest gently against his shoulder. He desperately didn’t want this to be their last moment.
“Now look forward.” She motioned, her tone rose with breathless excitement. “It’s really beautiful from here, like a glowing crystal blue ball. Your Kingdom. Earth.” She said softly in his ear.
Obeying her as she spoke, he looked forward, seeing Earth. The thought sounded strange in his head as he saw his home from such a distance. He’d never imagined what his planet looked like from a distance, it was as she said, beautiful.
She loosened her hold about his shoulders. Shifting her weight, her chin tilted slightly and head craned forward to see his reaction. Long golden waves of hair spilled over his shoulder. In that moment she could see his eyes flicker—entranced, nostalgic, and perhaps overcome—at the sight of his homeland from a different perspective.
A soft smile touched his lips, his gaze tracing the swirling blue and green of Earth. It was a strange sensation to look upon his home like this, a pang of homesickness washed over him. In hushed admiration he uttered, “It’s amazing… I’ve only ever seen the Moon like this. It’s truly beautiful…” Serenity’s soft blonde curls tumbled over his shoulder, her closeness reminding him of their dwindling time. A dull ache settled over his heart; could this truly be his final moment with her? Would he be able to let her go? His focus shifted from the breathing of the Princess and the beauty of his home from afar. It was a testament to what he felt himself being torn between.
“I thought you might like it.” She said softly, her shoulders curved forward. She gingerly tucked her hair back behind her shoulders. Subconsciously, her right hand rested alongside his right arm.
Her breath in his ear made his heart race again, he didn’t know what to say to her. Every option sounded more selfish from the last; all of them involving putting herself and her kingdom in danger.
“Serenity, I have a confession for you, I overheard you talking earlier in the evening.” He smiled softly at the recollection.
Something in his words shook her, eyes widened while she moved away, straightening her posture. Her right arm hung limp at her side, while her left hand clasped about it, just below her elbow. “You do sneak around with ease, don’t you?” Tone slightly exasperated. “How long have you been here exactly?” She questioned with amusement, hands moving toward her hips.
Allowing himself to hide his conflict behind his confidence he smirked again, “Well. Yes, I suppose I do… Just a little while before your and your Guardians came out…“ Clearing his throat to return to the topic at hand, “You defended Earth’s attempt to understand you better, with such grace and humility. Thank you, for I realize you certainly didn’t have to.” His gaze narrowed slightly as he posed the question to her.
“Oh.” She blushed. “You heard that.” As she put a special emphasis on her last word, she looked away from him to consider his statement. “Are you leading that initiative?” She asked, turning back. Wondering if her time with him had peaked his interest in her planet. Her eyes seemed to waver between his gaze and nothing, embarrassed that her advisors would be so closed-minded. “I know our planets are distant.” She said carefully. “But sometimes I think the mystery of the Moon creates foolish ideas of who we all are and what we stand for. The Earth I saw with you and the Earth I hear about are…somehow different.” She said. “And I can only image what people think of this Kingdom.” She sighed. “But, I have faith in people who care more for others than they do themselves. People who are honest and have beautiful dreams.” She mused. “You’re so gracious regarding Earth, and our well-being. May I ask why?”
“It’s my duty to watch over and protect your planet.” She said, moving beside him, leaning her elbows against the railing in front of her casually as her head tilted to the side to catch his gaze. She wasn’t surprised he didn’t know about their alliance and her role. “I’m so glad we bumped into each other. I’m confident that Earth’s future will be bright and prosperous under your leadership. I will support you any way I can.” She smiled.
A strange ache filled him as she moved to stand at his side. It was the first time since they’d reunited that he hadn’t been touching her, and he was surprised by the effect it had on him. “So you’re our Guardian? Your powers must be incredible to protect us from such a distance…” He tore his gaze from staring at Earth to meet her bright and inviting sapphire eyes.
“You could say that I’m a guardian, yes.” She smiled. Her lips parted, hands came together about her waist as her gaze fell from his. Her hands came together and drew apart. “Does the idea of power frighten you?” She questioned. “I’d hate to frighten you.” She said softly, shoulders curved upward, shrugging away from him. He was one of the few people who continued to embrace her, even with knowledge of who she was.
“The idea of you possessing power doesn’t frighten me.” Smirking slightly, he continued, “Perhaps before you saved my life I would have been a bit more wary, but I’m rather indebted to your power.”
“You have to understand…and I don’t know what you’ve heard…but there are consequences to using such power.” Her lips came together, jaw tightened. “Over the past millennium, there were instances of chaos and other natural events that could have wiped out humanity’s existence. The Earth you know would not be in existence today without my ancestor’s intervention.” She tried to explain. She tried to find the words. “To save lives is sacrifice. And my role is to be prepared to sacrifice mine for the greater good if necessary. My powers inherently…and one day the Ginzushou…are connected to my life force. The same as my mother.” She said, lifting her eyebrows tightening her jaw uncomfortably. She wanted to be transparent with him.
The way her gaze widened, truly fearing she may frighten him made his heart ache again. “I am not afraid of you…” “How have such things evaded Earth’s textbooks, I wonder?” Endymion’s brows furrowed a frown crossing his lips at how little he truly knew of his own history.
“Because it doesn’t have to be there…and it shouldn’t.” She cut in with a bemused smile. “We help when we must, but Earth has to take control of its destiny. We don’t want to create unnecessary dependencies.” She added.
The thought of Serenity’s station preparing her to sacrifice her own life made his stomach turn, the frown deepening across his expression. “It would seem you’ve understated your Royal Burden. That is a much heavier weight than my own.”
Swallowing hard, not relishing the thought of someone so bright and beautiful being willing and able to sacrifice herself. He hated his role as Prince of Earth at times, however, never would it ask such things of him. She mentioned the Ginzushou, which Lady Beryl had mentioned earlier, the entire Moon Culture and apparently his own, revolved around reverence for its power. Serenity was next in line to be its keeper. Opting to change the subject, he met her gaze again. “You have so much faith in me as a Ruler. Everyone seems to, I don’t know how I’ll rise to the occasion, but I will always do my best.” He sighed heavily, and smiled. “When you say support, you mean I shall encounter you again?” He worried his tone sounded desperate again, he’d been so confident around her thus far, but with their time slipping away, he needed to know if he could cling to the hope of someday seeing her again.
Hope entered her mind again. Her eyes closed and her lower lip brushed against the upper at his words. “I…I would love nothing more than to work with you Endymion…I want to…” She paused, tossing her gaze away, a hand at her side pulled into a fist. Her gaze stayed away from his carefully.
As her gaze shifted away from his, her response gave him hope. Just enough to believe he could see her again, that this wouldn’t be his last moment with her.
“But whether I agree with it, there’s a careful distance between our Kingdoms. People won’t understand. We’re a peaceful people. We don’t believe in violence in any form. But, there are those who would crave power if we were given more visibility. That’s dangerous for this Kingdom. It’s dangerous for me.”
As she spoke of the danger it would cause, his hope was dashed again, trying to reckon with the consequences. The Moon seemed to be a wonderful kingdom, only wishing to maintain peace. Who was he to put any of that in jeopardy? “I would never want to put you or your wonderful Kingdom in any danger.”
He’d proven his ineptitude of protecting her thus far, but if she gave him the chance, he would give his all to keeping her safe. It wasn’t a realistic idea and he needed to come to terms with it very soon, or he wouldn’t be able to tell her goodbye.
Leaning down, she let her chin sink against the palms of her hands. Her eyes sparkled. It was clear she spent many evenings looking at Earth and musing over the stars. “Endymion, what’s your dream?” She questioned.
Chuckling he shook his head, chiding her, “You ask so many questions.” He looked back towards his planet, the sight of it from a distance distracting his gaze, allowing him to dig deep, try to recall what his dream was. It wasn’t something people asked him often. They were concerned with his duty and his crown.
She rolled her eyes and shook her head as she let out a breath. “And you enjoy answering them, so continue.” She nudged into him playfully. For a moment, she could see them together batting water at each other at Lake Kosuke. She enjoyed the carefree banter.
Suddenly a sad smile touched his lips, his dream was completely unrealistic. “It sounds foolish, especially given the life of fortune I was born into. But, I’d want to be a farmer or something like that. Someone who lives surrounded by nothing but land and trees. A whole life of putting yourself into the land and receiving something back. It’d surely be a rather hard life,” Meeting her gaze, he realized how wistful he must have sounded, “But it would be so rewarding, at least I like to think it would be.” Turning to face her, he reached down to gently take hold of her hand again; his gloved thumb twitching against the tops of her fingers.
“It sounds quite perfect, actually.” She said. “Perhaps you are a farmer, you’re just cultivating a lot of land and a lot of people. They are all so taken with you and look to you for guidance…and you...” Her words trailed off as she felt the warmth of his hand open hers. It was an ignition point that seemed to propel a lightness and ease throughout her entire body.
His gaze intensified, watching her closely, hoping to sear the memory of her sapphire eyes deep into his memory. “What’s your dream, Serenity?” He questioned gently.
“My dream?” She questioned. Her gaze locked upon his hands. Her heart was pounding. She had told herself that she’d never see him again. She had come to terms with it. But now, here he was and regardless of the consequence she didn’t want him to leave. She had to see him again. They just wanted to be normal. She felt normal with him. Her body shook and mind raced. “My dream…” Her left hand moved in front of her waist and fell open over his. Suddenly there was urgency in her eyes and tone. “I believe my dream’s changed recently.” She said suddenly with some level of confidence. She moved closer to him, her hand shifted, each cupping his one hand tightly. “Endymion, I” Desperation. Fear. It was all there. She could never take back the words she was about to say, but she knew in her heart it was worth it. Suddenly, she felt she had wasted so much time trying to distance herself instead of embracing all the freedom and understanding he represented.
