Luna perched atop a high ledge of the Moon Kingdom’s training grounds. “Princesses of the Inner System, on behalf of myself and the Queen, we are so glad that each of you are here.”
Her knees bent and then hind legs stretched as she leapt to the main floor to speak to them closely. “I know it’s not easy being away from your homes for such a long time, but this dedication to your training will no doubt ensure the prosperity and safety of all Kingdoms.” She offered.
She padded over to a table, quickly jumping on top of it. “And you are just in time, because we’ve updated your henshin sticks. I’d love to spend the next few hours seeing how each of you settle into your new powers.” She added, her gaze falling upon four glowing sticks. Each held the unique symbols and colors of each of the four princesses’ home lands.
The Princess of Venus stood tall, wearing a long yellow gown with a pale orange necklace that clung tightly to her neck. Her gloved fingertips slid down the cool and smooth stick that called to her. There was something about that moment when she connected with it. She could feel its power; it was electric. And in that moment, it all felt so right and yet so foreign.
“I’ll go first. And Luna, we’ve known each other for a long time. You can just call me Minako.” She winked with a nod.
Her long golden locks spun as her head snapped to its side, and her gaze fell upon the Princess of Mars. She was a woman that Minako had grown quite close to over their years of visits to the Moon Kingdom. Now that the four women would be there in a more permanent capacity to watch over and protect the Moon Princess.
“Would you like to spar, Rei?” She grinned, lifting up her henshin stick as she called out: “Venus Power, make up!” Her eyes closed and lips formed a gentle smile as she felt her entire body enveloped in warmth and light. Her eyes trailed down to take in her new look, gloved hands grasped at the chain that hung loosely about her waist.
For a fleeting moment, her heart raced. She had always known what her destiny was. She proudly proclaimed her support for the Moon Kingdom, for it’s support of her own Kingdom and the protection that the Moon Kingdom could ultimately offer all within the alliance. But, Luna’s statement rung true: It was hard to be away from home and to accept the dangers that could be ahead of her as she evolved into this role of guardian.

The Princess of Jupiter folded her arms over her chest and grinned as the Princess of Venus took the role of Sailor Venus, a pretty guardian in a sailor suit. While she was still royalty, the princess had a bit of a tomboyish do-it-yourself streak which others sometimes interpreted for being less refined. Consequently, she was happy to be among 'peers', casting off servants for the chance to be in the thick of things herself. That, and she was on a personal mission to convert the others to the love of Jupiterian cuisine by her own hand.
In her turn, she picked up her henshin rod and studied the symbol of Jupiter engraved on it. She reminded herself that she was here as much for her people as she was for herself and raised her hand in the customary exclamation, "Jupiter Power, Make Up!"
The power of the Moon technology crackled through her as literal lightning until she too stood as a Sailor Guardian, "Woo, what a rush!" she said, punching a fist into an open palm, "I'm ready to go!"

The Princess of Mars stood among her fellow princess', her crimson satin gown clinging to her lithe form, as Luna gave greetings and instructions, but she was only half listening. Though physically present, her thoughts were miles away, in her beloved home kingdom on Mars. Her guardians Phobos and Deimos had remained behind to look after things while she was away, but Rei could not help but feel a bit homesick. For years now the Princess of Mars had traveled many times to the Moon Kingdom, as well as the kingdoms of her fellow Inner System Princess', but this would be the first time the Kingdom of Mars would be without it's guardian princess for an extended period of time. Though she knew everything would be fine, her people were formidable warriors and her guardians were capable of managing things in her stead, Princess Rei could not shake the knot of worry that welled in her stomach. When next she had a moment to herself, she would have to meditate.
The sound of her dear friend Minako, the Princess of Venus', voice calling her name drew Princess Rei back into herself.
Her deep purple eyes shifted to the beautiful Venetian Princess and a smile spread across her ruby lips. During their time together, Rei had grown deeply fond of Minako, not just as a friend, but as a respected leader and warrior. Seeing her now as she transformed into the warrior of Venus, Rei was reminded of why she was here. Long ago she had foreseen her destiny as a guardian, not just of her kingdom, but of the Moon Kingdom as well. Today, she was to begin her training and seize her destiny with her friends and fellow warriors.
"Of course," she responded, grasping her henshin stick in her gloved hand. "Mars Power, make up!"
Flames erupted around her, engulfing her form and warming her skin. Her gown dissolved into her warrior attire and the fire dispersed as quickly as it had ignited. She then moved with Minako away from the others so they could begin sparing.
"Ready when you are," she said with a grin as she fell into a fighting stance.

Minako clasped her hands together with a nod as she watched the Princess of Jupiter dive in with such energy and enthusiasm. Minako knew she couldn’t be hesitant now. She had to embrace the duties that came with her destiny. She had to lead, and being unsure would only create rifts and questions among the group. She made a quiet pact with herself to stay confident and strong, like Makoto.
Venus circled round the two women who had transformed in front of her. The silence was deafening at first, she could hear their breaths. Rei’s words of being ready seemed to ring in her ears. It was all about that first moment. That first bolt to set the tone and ensure dominance in a battle. Any good warrior should want the upper hand. As she circled the two who were ready for battle, her neck craned forward.
Both stood with such life and confidence. As her eyes drank in the strong expressions on the womens’ faces she knew the untapped depths of power that reigned within each of them. Her gloved hands rested calmly on her hips.
“Alright then. Last one standing wins.” She smiled. Her fingertips slowly tugged at the chain that hung about her skirt. At her touch the seemingly lifeless orange chain glowed gold, springing to life. She conducted the chain forward in one flick of the wrist and upward to a set a potted plants that rested high along a set of beams above them.
She knocked two of the pots off, allowing them to plummet toward the two women. She’d start this battle by trying to get them off balance to gain the upper hand.

As the three women quickly dove into the training simulations, the Princess of Mercury quietly watched. Her eyes opened widely at Minako’s first display. She could already deduce these powers were significantly upgraded.
She thought back to one of her first meeting’s at the palace. Each of them were so young, hardly knowing themselves yet being asked to pledge allegiance to a Kingdom they did not yet understand. As she had grown up and learned more, her convictions were unwavering to the Moon’s royal family and the surrounding inner system kingdoms. There was a part of her that felt disconnected from being a warrior.
In the beginning, Luna had to carefully coach each girl in how to call forward her powers and exactly what to say. But, by seeing Minako alone, she knew this was not the case. These powers called out to them and were malleable to each girl’s will.
She was passive in nature. She enjoyed knowledge and books. She took respite in opportunities to tutor and nurture Serenity in her studies of the different kingdoms and political dealings.
She carefully crept around the other side of the table, plucking her henshin stuck from the table. “Mercury power, make up!” She yelled. It was almost difficult to get the words out, but as the calming and cooling waters rolled over her body in a tight embrace, she felt oddly free.
For a moment she took in the scene. She then closed her eyes: “My turn!” She called to the group. She crossed her arms in front of her face, a blue orb of energy began to manifest itself. As it grew in size she waved her arms forward, letting the orb split and cover the space in a think mist. Now they’d see who would take advantage of the cover and who would be caught off guard. This would be a great opportunity to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of her opponents. It had been some time since they had all been together. It would be interesting to see how each one of them had grown and evolved.

Sailor Jupiter felt the first flush of battle as Venus' love-me chain whipped out, snapping through the air. Usually the thrill of the fight was met with anticipated guilt; if she was fighting then she would be scolded for not being "lady-like" enough. Likely she would land a good hit on one of the other noble boys who would then cry how the Princess was beating them up, even if they ignored it was because they were trying to peep on or harass her or one of the other ladies of the court. But not here. Not here. That realization ignited a new kind of thrill -- one of exhilaration. She was free to be herself. Encouraged to be herself. If she felt any guilt at all now, it was in enjoying the personal freedom this new duty seemed to bring with it.
Jupiter rolled out of the way once she realized the whip was not targeted at her, but at the vases which was now flying toward her and Mars respectively. She readied herself quickly from a kneeling position, senses perked, as one used to fighting from several angles at once. The potted plant crashed nearby and Jupiter called out to Venus in light-hearted taunt, "I can't let you get away with smashing those poor plants' homes now!" She started a rush from a squat, planning on engaging from melee range--her specialty.
However, before she got to the Guardian of Love, a new voice from the quiet princess reached her ears and suddenly the air was awash in cool blue obscurity and Jupiter lost sight of her target as she careened forth.

Sailor Mars grinned as she darted out of the way of the pot, a fire burning deep within her chest. The thrill of battle always excited her and knowing that she was up against warriors she saw as equals made it all the more exciting. Just as she took up her stance again, a thick fog permeated the air and swallowed the forms of Sailor Venus and Sailor Jupiter. Instinctively, Rei crouched and moved slowly so as not to stir up the fog. Sailor Mercury had just given her an advantage: she could use the fog as cover and deliver surprise attacks at the other soldiers. A tingle of excitement coursed through her body. Unlike the others, Rei didn't need to see her targets. She could feel them. Sailor Mars knelt perfectly still as her eyes slid shut and her mind reached out, searching for the energies of her comrades. When she was certain she had them she slowly raised both her hands and fired a small fire ball at each of them, then quickly moved from her position to avoid any retaliation they might send her way. The fire balls wouldn't do much damage, but they would certainly knock them off of their feet if they connected.

“Gomen!” Venus said, clapping her hands together with a lowered head in a quick apology. She had forgotten how passionate the other princess was about plants. Though as she watched the Princess of Jupiter spark forward to deliver justice she quickly straightened her posture, lips parting.
She lifted her arms to reset her energies. Her legs bent at the knees as she readied herself to jump out of the way, but her alertness disintegrated as a thick fog wrapped about her.
She quickly turned to the side as she felt a great wind or perhaps person brush past her. “Oh!” She winced as one foot came out from underneath her. At first it was shock and then a tempered burning continued to singe her senses. She brought a gloved hand to her lower right leg, rubbing the tender flesh for a moment. At first it was a playful game, but this gift from Mars was a good reminder of the consequences and reality of their responsibilities.
“Mars.” She said, as she turned over on her knees, seeing a small rift in the dense fog. It was the path of the attack and she would be the one to trace it back to its fiery source. She tugged the chain about her waste back to life as it glowed a bright gold with flecks of orange. ‘I’m coming for you Mars.’ She thought as she flicked her wrist, nurturing the chain to stay low to the ground and ensnare the fire princess.
As the chain glowed, she could begin to see the tall princess of Jupiter. She whispered, motioning with her free hand. “Why don’t we try to combine our powers and gang up on Mars?” She offered.

Wrapped within the dense fog of Mercury's mist, Jupiter skidded to a halt and tightened her senses. She heard before she saw the fiery blasts come at her and just barely had time to twist her body as it connected with her shoulder, knocking her awkwardly to the ground. The hit provoked a smile on her lips with proof she was indeed up against peers today. She pulled herself to her feet.
"Oh, so you want to play with fire, huh Mars?" she called, recklessly giving away her position. She glanced toward the orange glow which suddenly illuminated Venus, nodded with a grin to her suggestion and turned back in the general direction the fireball had come from, "Let's see how you handle the Storm!"
From her tiara rose a small antenna. Always prone to the dramatic, Jupiter announced her attack, "My Guardian Star, Jupiter! Let the Storm Rage on, let the Lightning Strike!" Suddenly the sky was split by light as electricity charged her tiara and flowed into her waiting hands as crosses of pure energy. "Jupiter Thunderbolt!" she declared, and thrust the energy in the general direction the fire blast had come from. The thunderbolt was a narrow attack and unlikely to hit without a sight check, but she hoped it would flush out or illuminate anyone who wanted to instinctively dodge the attack. After that, she wondered if Venus' chain could absorb the energy of the blast and direct it to a more, ahem, appropriate target.

Venus' long golden locks snaked with her movement. A strong vibration caused the ground to rumble as Jupiter summoned her next attack. The vibrations rose from her feet and continued to awaken her senses. She gave her fellow warrior a strong nod as she straightened her posture.
Her eyes closed as she lifted one arm above her head, pointing her finger to the skies, what started as a weak light quickly manifested itself as an impressive beam of golden light.
She directed her arm forward, allowing the beam of light to embrace the thunder. She took in a deep breath, her muscles tensing. Her brow furrowed as she concentrated, trying to follow the same path to direct the golden ball of thunder at its intended target.
As she watched the attack cut through the fog, her gaze narrowed. She was to be the leader of these guardians. It was in this moment that she needed to step up and command respect. She yearned to feel her place among these strong women was correct. Just as they protected the Moon Kingdom, she would only be effective if the other princesses legitimately believed in her. Could she meet such high expectations. She closed her eyes, sucking in a deep breath. She had to focus now. Now was not the time to let her mind wander.

Large white French doors separated the main training grounds and gardens from the carefully guarded insides of the Moon Kingdom. They towered in height and width over any mere person. In the fraction of space that separated one door from the other, ocean blue orbs stalked the training session.
Serenity sat on the floor on her knees, forehead pressed against the space separating the doors. Her lips parted and a sharp breath released as she watched the four princesses transform into regal guardians. Even with the sliver of a view she had, she was completely taken by what followed. Her lithe frame was completely swallowed by a pool of pale green, the multitude of fabric layers of the gown she wore.
Her eyes widened and neck craned forward, eyes squinting to better her view. The entire space became a foggy wasteland. She brought her arms up about her upper body, shivering slightly at the thought. Her eyes closed, letting her ears take over. If she couldn’t see, at least should hear the mock battle wage on.
She let out an audible groan as she struggled to hear much. Her shoulder drooped, as her gaze fell to her opened hands. She knew she had powers, in fact, in odd moments of her upbringing those powers manifested themselves—to her mother’s displeasure.
She wanted to stand with her fellow princesses and protect her kingdom, as well as watch over Earth. Although she had never been to the planet, she was fascinated by what she knew of it: expansive flora and fauna, unique bodies of water, and seasons with different temperatures. When she wasn’t being pulled from one event to the next advisor session, she loved to look upon that little blue ball that often hung just outside the main balcony.
She simply could not understand why her mother would not let her embrace her powers. She didn’t want to be a wall flower, and perhaps, if she could better protect herself, she could experience more things freely.

Purity. Often defined as freedom from anything that debases, pollutes or mars the condition of something pure. As Queen Serenity cast a watchful sweeping gaze across the royal courtyard of her palace, she saw purity in the hearts of those who milled about below. Fingertips gingerly rested atop the railing of the balcony she now stood at.
Today was a bit of a momentous occasion. For today the princess’ of Venus, Mars, Mercury and Jupiter had arrived to officially become the guardians of her beloved daughter, Princess Serenity. They would protect her from all harm, ensure she would be able to safely train to become the keeper of the maboroshi no ginzuishou. Someday her daughter would take the throne as Queen of the Moon Kingdom. Such a wonderful thought should bring her joy, yet, it seemed to garner anxiety. For it seemed Serenity was still too much of a dreamer; forever caught up in daydreams of aspirations that were far below her.
A determined frown crossed the Queen’s face as she turned, taking up the delicate skirt of the white gown into her fingertips as her light footsteps quickly led her deeper into the Moon Palace. A few minutes passed, checking the places Serenity should have been; in the library, catching up on fine literature, or the painter’s lounge expressing her creativity. Even the dining hall to feign her hunger would have been acceptable.
Yet, this drew no surprise to the Queen, her daughter was a notoriously curious girl, forever longing to learn of things that weren't her business. As Queen Serenity turned into the hall that lead to the Training Grounds she found the dejected figure of her beautiful daughter sitting upon the ground. Releasing the skirt, she sighed deeply, the frown deepening as she wordlessly approached her daughter.
Standing only a few feet away, she cleared her throat to make her presence known. Hands folded elegantly at her waist as she spoke, “My Dearest Serenity, what drew you here away from your studies?” The startled look upon the young woman’s face caused her heart to swell with compassion, it was natural to be curious, even though her daughter would often forsake duty for curiosity.
Motioning to the closed doorway, “I understand it’s very exciting that your guardians arrived today, but you are not meant to endure battles and the like, my darling. It’s beneath you.” A warm smile rose to the Queen’s face, “You will be Queen someday, Serenity, you are not meant to eavesdrop on training exercises… come along my dear. Perhaps you can regale me with what your tutors taught you today?”

It was a passive-aggressive tone that swept from her mother’s lips into Serenity’s ears. Her eyes closed and chin lifted. She turned about slowly, shoulders hunched and a sheepish look plastered over her face. She knew she had just been caught somewhere she shouldn’t be.
“I knew they were all arriving today. It’s so wonderful to have them here in the palace! I had hoped to welcome them personally before they started training.” She began to explain.” But, as her mother continued on, Serenity frowned. Daintily, she picked herself up from her seated position, quickly sweeping into an elegant curtsy. Her eyes cast to the floor in respect.
“Yes mother, I’ll walk with you.” She said simply and submissively. There was a large drop in her tone; the energy and excitement of her first statements had been sapped away. She now stood like an angel with clipped wings. Her fingertips curled against the smooth fabric of her gown, lifting it as she walked with her mother.
Serenity began to summarize her most recent advisory session. “I learned that in multi-kingdom negotiations, it’s critical to keep your agenda only known to yourself. There are many stakeholders, with many different desired outcomes—even within a single kingdom.” She stated, gesturing with her hands to add emphasis to the most critical part of the lesson. “It’s important to understand which stakeholders have the most leverage and which align most with our kingdom’s best intentions. That way we have the best possible chances of reaching the most beneficial alliances.”
And with every word she mentioned a fire within her started to spark then boil over. How could she feel so alone while surrounded by so many people. It was as if she couldn’t breathe. Instinctively, she stopped dead in her tracks, sucking in a deep breath. Her gaze narrowed slightly.
“But, I found the whole lesson to be full of backhanded policies and petty politics.” She vented. “Why can’t we, as rulers, simply be transparent. If we are truly making decisions that are best for our people, there should be nothing to hide. We should treat the needs of all kingdoms equally and work together. We are much stronger together and aligned. When we support each other, we have unlimited resources, versus what we can accomplish as one single entity.” She confessed with frustration.
That fire was now all-consuming and it’s name was restlessness. “Mother, I so deeply wish that you’d let me carve my own path.” She urged. “I don’t want to be in these silly classes, learning to think what others think is the way to rule.” Her hands that had remained at her sides grew tense, fingertips clenched about the fabric of her dress in tight fists. “I know you think I’m naïve at times, but I want to protect this kingdom, its people and myself. You know I have powers, but you won’t let me embrace them.” She reeled as her restlessness sprung forward for her mother to see.

A light, slow exhale escaped the Queen’s lips as her daughter rose gracefully to her feet and turned to face her. The young woman was so lively, so zealous about everything that this brought no surprise tinged the Moon Queen’s elegant features. “Darling Serenity. It’s expected to be so excited, but your guardians will always be with you from now on. Luna helped to ensure that they did not disturb you during your studies. Do bear in mind, it’s also a very exciting time for them, to be receiving their powers.”
The forever polished façade of Queen Serenity warmed with a gentle smile as Serenity offered her a proper curtsey. Though there were many days where she wondered if her beautiful daughter would accept the role she was born into; if she would ever allow herself to blossom into the wonderful Monarch she could certainly be. Hope thrived within her as they began walking down the lovely Moon Kingdom Palace corridor, the young woman at her side beginning to relay the tales of today’s lessons.
A wall of windows at their right side allowed endless beams of sunlight to stream in, brightening the varied shades of white that adorned the hall. The décor of the entire palace was much like its Queen. Lovely, elegant, purposeful in all ways but forever carrying an innate sense of propriety wrapped in ice. Their path interrupted, her pale eyebrows raising in surprise at the imminent outburst. Her façade remain largely unchanged by the passion fueling Serenity’s tirade. It was a ruler’s job to remain impartial and calm at all times, and Queen Serenity seemingly bore the weight of her crown with ease.
“Serenity, darling. You’re so young and so full of hope. Transparency isn’t realistic, it’s idealistic. In a perfect world we could rule in such a way. However, our universe is complicated and we are the last Kingdom with the ability to be transparent. As the Moon Kingdom Royal Family, we are also blessed to protect the Maboroshi No Ginzuishou.” Pausing to inhale deeply again, a strange sense of understanding pulling at the edges of her words, “The Maboroshi No Ginzuishou is more powerful than you even realize. If we were to be more open the residents of our universe, then unfortunately the immoral people whom now reside peacefully would begin to pursue its power for evil. Just as your senshi will protect you at the cost of their lives and happiness, so are we prisoners to the safety of the Maboroshi No Ginzuishou.”
A gentle smile touched her lips, sapphire gaze meeting the tortured reflection of the spirited blonde princess before her. “Dearest Serenity, you are not wrong. The incredible things we could all achieve together would be a magnificent thing to behold. Yet, it can never happen. There will always be disagreements, those who feel slighted and those who seek to use the goodness in others for personal gain.” A sadness pulled at the waning smile, what a charming notion to see the best the universe had to offer. Perhaps the most beautiful piece of her daughter was the fact that she carried the unique ability to truly see goodness and light everywhere; even when it could not be found by others and when simply did not exist? Serenity would create goodness.
“We reside now in the greatest peace that history has ever recorded. Perhaps the lessons seem peculiar or dry to you now. But someday when you are Queen, you will see that we need not achieve peace for that battle has been won for us by our ancestors. It will be imperative to manage any new conflicts that arise in order to maintain the harmony.” Queen Serenity was proper in all ways and was certainly not known for her outward expression of affection, but she reached for Princess Serenity’s hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
“Naïve is the wrong word to describe you, my daughter. Spirited, hopeful, bold even. The ability to see the beauty in everything is what will make you a wonderful ruler. However capable you are to protect your kingdom and people, they need no need for protections or shows of power if we can maintain the peace.” Releasing her hand, Queen Serenity plucked at the smooth fabric of her white skirt, holding it up as she moved towards the window, grandly gesturing to the view of the kingdom before them. “We rule the Kingdom of the Moon first and foremost, yet we are also responsible for maintaining balance in the Universe.”
Brushing aside some of her daughter’s concerns for mere theatrics, the Queen continued refusing to regard the genuine reasons behind Serenity’s apprehension and desire to choose for herself. “If your tutors bore you terribly, perhaps Princess Mercury can help you with your studies. She’s quite brilliant and knowledgeable.”

Sailor Mars braced herself for her fellow guardian's retaliation. She heard Sailor Jupiter call to her and her ruby lips curled into a sly grin. Before she could utter a retort she felt the air come alive and the hairs on her arms stood on end, a tell-tale sign of the Princess of Jupiter's signature attack. The Princess of Mars readied herself to doge out of the way when a golden beam of light caught her off guard. She tried to dodge to the right quickly, but the beam managed to catch her on her left calf and deliver the shock of Sailor Jupiter's lightning attack.
"Ahh!" she called out, nearly falling over when she tried to put weight on her spasming left leg. She resumed her kneeling position, deftly rubbing her left calf to try and calm it while she gathered herself.
"So, teaming up on me, eh? Sailor Mercury, care to even the odds?" she asked with a whimsical grin.
